Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I reviewed the Critical Reading sections I had the student do in order to gauge his current proficiency, and he did well with the Passage Based Reading and quite well with Sentence Completion. I then had him do PBR flashcards to teach him how to read carefully and actively and to show him how to avoid certain cognitive biases that prevent students from accurately perceiving the writer's intent and point of view. I then assigned him 3 Math sections from his blue book as a diagnostic of his math abilities for next time."
"For this lesson, the student and I first went over the essay she had completed and discussed how to work around the time restriction to get all she needed in to the paper. We then spent most of our time on the Critical Reading section where she continues to do very well on the passages but needs to work on her vocabulary for the harder sentence completion questions. She is fine on the grammar for now as she got no wrong in the practice section she did and still needs to practice more with the math."
"We covered the Critical Reading, short and long passages section of the blue book. She also did the practice problems for that section. She was left with practice in Critical Reading out of her book with emphasis on the 5 question types. Also, she is to continue her vocabulary review."
"The student did very well in our session today. We started by working through the homework, which comprised a whole critical reading section. She is continuing to improve in these sections, though she is still a bit hesitant when picking answers. We then went through another English section to spot-check grammar issues and then walked through the essay portion. We finished by starting another critical reading section and I asked her to finish out the section for homework. Overall, the student is progressing well and I hope to drive-home some of the substantive material before we add the timing component in a few weeks. Looking forward to seeing her again soon."
"The student and I did a general ACT evaluation, and figured out his strengths and weaknesses. He wants to concentrate on Science, and also review Math. Tonight we went through the format of the ACT science test, including the types of passages, and what questions to expect. The student is supposed to complete Diagnostic Test 1 before our next meeting."
"The student was able to complete her extra practice for the past week. She focused mostly on PSAT material, as she has the PSAT test on Wednesday (10/15). We worked mainly on the writing sections. She did much better with identifying sentence errors. She completed two full writing sections during our session, and we discussed the few questions that she missed, highlighting the grammar point, and talking about how to eliminate some of the answers. We discussed reading in the last part of our session. She is doing much better on the vocab questions. She is planning to continue practicing reading and English passages weekly to prepare for her November ACT."
"This was to be my final session with the student and I was a bit bummed that this was the case. He had worked some challenging problems and had gotten a few wrong so we reviewed those and then tried some of the problems from the back of a bunch of math sections, always the most difficult ones. He seems well motivated and if he can study just a bit more before the exam I think he should do quite well."
"For our final session together, the student and I reviewed all of the tips I'd given him for the critical reading section, but before we began, he had some past practice test results that he shared with me. After attempting several critical reading practice sessions, he realized he was nearing a 66% correct rate on these sessions which would result in a score of approximately 600; he was quite excited about this progress, and it was nice to see him feeling confident about the things we'd discussed. For the rest of our session, I asked him to walk me through the tricks I'd given him, and the primary thing I attempted to help him with was how he might productively paraphrase completing the sentence questions and paragraphs within the various passages."
"This was my final session with the student before her test. We went over a couple of practice sections she had completed as homework, and talked about how she had split up her time among the questions. She has a good grasp on the need to balance hitting as many questions as possible with performing as accurately as possible. She now has a much better idea of where she can cut out excessive time without sacrificing too much accuracy, and how to adjust her strategy based on how much time remains for a section. We reviewed a few of the harder math concepts, then went over strategies for approaching reading comprehension questions efficiently. Overall I am confident that her timing and accuracy have both improved greatly since our first session."
"Discussed essay question techniques and examples for topics with the student, using topics from an SAT book. Corrected an essay. Did math problems and sentence correction problems with her; also discussed college application essay writing (very briefly) with her. Assigned the rest of Practice Test 1 and an essay to her as homework."
"We met for a final time prior to the student taking the SAT the next Saturday. She appeared well-prepared and confident."
"The student took an SAT reading section, and I scored his answers. Then he wrote an essay portion as SAT practice. He has already improved from the first time, specifically in spelling and organization. Lastly, I quizzed him about vocabulary words."
