Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student's most recent practice test went up! She has a lot of confidence back for the test this Wednesday. We spent our final session looking at her greatest areas of need in terms of math and verbal. We worked through difficult content problems and went over key takeaways for each section of the test. She is going to review the areas of need and the PSAT grammar rules covered in our text before her test Wednesday."
"Tonight the student and I began working through his study guide for his upcoming test over integration. In the process, I taught him how to integrate with u-substitutions and how to find integrals of the absolute value function, despite the function having no anti-derivative. The student performed well and I believe he will do well on the test also."
"The student and I worked through problems with multiplying and dividing decimals. We also spent time working on geometry concepts with lines and angles. For the verbal section, she did practice analogies and word part problems. She seems to be improving at getting an idea of what a word means by looking at its parts."
"Today we worked on some assessment practice material. The questions mostly pertained to linear equations: using y=mx+b, parallel lines, finding equations when given points, and reading linear graphs. I think she now has a better understanding of the material, however, she might need a little more practice when having to simplify an equation and put it into y=mx+b format."
"This week we are completing an example key study guide to roots, prefixes, suffixes for the student's English quiz. Today he built a short definition and summary sheet for the vocal study guide."
"The student and I had our first session today. We talked about spelling techniques and being able to recognize patterns in words. We also discussed how to outline a persuasive essay and began to write one together."
"The student and I worked on his latest English essay. He brainstormed and outlined ideas and then started on his rough draft. He commented that this was some of the best writing he has ever done! He has shown steady improvement in narrative writing, and I hope that he can transfer these skills to both persuasive and expository pieces."
"The student and I worked on developing his essay idea. He responded well to the idea of creating a character based on a real-life figure. He developed a much more powerful story line this time. He was having trouble with grammar and we resolved those issues as well. He has a social studies exam coming up on Tuesday but he seems to have a strong grasp on the material."
"The student and I reviewed Chemistry concepts. We reviewed ionic and covalent nomenclature, types of chemical reactions (synthesis, decomposition, etc.), and balancing chemical equations. We practiced problems from her textbook and I showed her alternate ways of solving the problems. Towards the end of the session we touched on a few Algebra concepts from a test she recently took. "
"We went over the 2 chapters the student had on evolution. We focused on explaining the evolutionary examples given in the book and looked at the models of evolution. The 2nd chapter focused on phylogeny and comparing various traits amongst groups. We went over phylogenetic trees, clades, and homologous genes."
"More math today. Focused mainly on problems that can be modeled using algebraic equations or relationships, especially quantitative comparison questions, and my "table" method for solving them. I assigned a bunch of practice work for him to do between now and our next session, so he'll be busy. Lot's to cover, but it's going well so far."
"During this session, the student and I worked on some reading exercises. Then we did some online math games, focusing mostly on the addition and subtraction of fractions and decimals. At the end of the session, I had him write a short essay on his favorite holiday."
