Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, I worked with the student on her private school application essay. We decided to rewrite the majority of her main essay. I told her to focus on one story instead of many different ideas."
"The student and I worked on several reading and writing exercises based on a single short story. Our focus was to introduce him to story structure (characters, setting, problem, resolution) in order to improve his reading comprehension. The exercises were more demanding this time. I asked him to continue working on his reading journal, but to focus more narrowly on identifying those four structural elements for each book. I spent some time speaking with his mother about the student's progress, provided copies of all his past work, and gave her my standards based assessment of his skills. She shared with me the student's report card which assessed him at exactly where I placed him."
"The student and I reviewed the sentence combining concepts we discussed at our previous meeting. We then applied these concepts to an extended sentence combining exercise using several paragraphs from an essay about reading education. I had divided each sentence in the original essay into a group of several simple sentences. Together, she and I recombined these groups into longer, more elegant sentences and compared our results with the original essay. We also continued our discussion about verbs. I asked her to go over some of her writing and look for examples of the tenses we discussed."
