Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"It was such a pleasure working with you and the student! He truly is a special guy.
As discussed, I will look up the standards for 8th grade, and the student and I will work towards those goals that he'll need to reach for that grade."

"The student worked on times tables, perfect squares, multiplication, physical & mental number line, perimeters, and areas. I assigned 4 pages from a math workbook and 4 pages of mixed times tables problems."
"Linear programming, so graphing inequalities and using them as constraints to find the maximum or minimum of a function. Student gets confused when dealing with word problems because she has some trouble assigning and remembering which variable goes with which part of the problem. She also confuses the axes often on the graphs, which is more just impulsiveness and rushing and not taking time with the problem rather than an inability to do it."
"We discussed sequences and series, working mainly on convergence tests and power series (radius of convergence). We also reviewed proofs and induction. The student improved her ability to recognize the correct convergence test and became very comfortable with the ratio test. She also was very efficient in using induction."
"Reviewed questions in the math, English, and writing sections of the ACT. Assessed thought process behind the way the student answers the questions, and made recommendations. Next week we will review wrong answers from a practice exam the student will take during the week."
"I had my first session with the student today, and it went well. He's a great kid, and he wants to do well. He did a little writing for me. We'll plan to work on spelling. We worked on math for most of the session. He knows a lot of math facts and can do mental math well."
"The student and I reviewed the topics and historical events/figures covered in her book. We discussed historical themes of the 1890's. Then, we outlined major topics to guide her research and drafting. I discussed a method with the student using sticky notes and filling in quotes and facts into her outline and writing around it. The student will have marked and placed information in her outline concerning each topic covered in her outline by our next meeting."
"Chemistry Reviewed some more basic concepts on equilibrium. We went through a complex homework problem that required utilizing concepts currently being studied and concepts covered earlier in the school year. I also discussed the student's progress with his mother."
"Today we wrapped up section 2.4 on limits and deltaepsilon problems by graphing and reviewing the solution to an exponential function and reviewing a partially factorable cubic. We also talked about finding maximum and minimum values of a function on an interval by looking at the boundary points and where the derivative is 0. Moving on to section 2.5, we talked about continuity and went over some more difficult problems he had a little trouble with."
"Today the student and I focused on the Algebra and Functions chapter and covered word problems, direct/inverse variation, functions, and transformations. Most of our time was spent on the word problems about averages, d=rt, and percentages. I told her to break up the question into parts; plug each math sentence into the equation before even moving on to the next part of the question. Then find the question and see what information is missing to find it's answer. I had her explain the steps of each question back to me so that I knew that she really understood the processes behind each answer. I think we made some good progress today. I assigned her some homework I would like to go over on Tuesday."
"For this session we covered chapter 8, sections 6 and 7, which dealt with factoring polynomials using two variables. Skills required included finding the greatest common factor, and checking answers using FOIL. Edward completed homework assignments which were reviewed by me. Additionally, we did some work in physical sciences, specifically balancing chemical equations. We worked on examples from his textbook which required understanding how to balance elements by taking into account subscript notations."
"Logarithmic functions and exponential. Taught the basic concepts, and easier methods of working out solutions. The student needs to review and practice the basic laws of logarithms, so that the next few sections will be easier for her to do. She has not got her results from the previous test yet, but she feels confident in it. We will see how she went; that chapter is harder than the current one. She doesn't have any tests or quizzes coming up soon, so this is the perfect chance for her to practice the basics to perfection."
