How can a Elementary Math tutor help you?

Math is a core component of education, which is why students begin learning this subject as early as kindergarten and are required to take math classes every year until they graduate high school. The math classes your child takes in elementary school create a foundation for higher level math classes later, including in college, and could help them understand the math portions of standardized tests. The CMAS (Colorado Measures of Academic Success) and the PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) both test your child's understanding of math based on their grade level. College entrance exams, including the PSAT, SAT, ACT, and general GRE also require a solid foundation in math in order to do well. This subject creates the foundation for your child's success in school and life, but if they are struggling with elementary math, you may wonder how you could help them outside of the classroom. An elementary math tutor in Centennial, CO, can be the key that unlocks your child's potential in elementary math.

Varsity Tutors' educational directors will find an elementary math tutor for your child in Centennial by getting to know them and their goals and needs. We will pair your child with a professional, independent elementary math tutor who has experience helping students like your child learn fundamental concepts. These include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, as well as developing a better number sense for the number line and understanding probability, fractions, and measurements like length or width. Elementary math is the foundation for data analysis, operations, and algebraic thinking, so it is important to try to make sure your child gets help learning these skills now.

Session Summaries by Elementary Math Tutors

Centennial, CO Elementary Math tutoring
Today we focused on measurements and how to use a ruler. I gave a brief introduction explaining an inch, half inch, and centimeters. Then she practiced measuring different items with the ruler. She had to write the correct measurement of the item to the nearest inch and half inch. She struggled with measuring to the nearest half inch but did well after some practice. Next we attempted to review her 6 multiplication table, but I realized she had not practiced her multiplication tables. Therefore, we reviewed her 1-6 multiplication tables. I reminded her that in order to excel at multiplication tables she would have to practice. Lastly, she completed a worksheet that required her to tell time and draw a clock with the correct time. I was pleased to find out that she got a 100% on her math test.

The student did absolutely great today! He was very focused and ready to learn. Today, we reviewed time. This included reading analog clocks and understanding time conversion (hours to minutes). We used multiple worksheets to go over these concepts. For the most part, the worksheets consisted of examples such as, "If John left his home at 5:15 and arrived at work an hour and thirty minutes later, what time did John arrive to work?" At first, the student had trouble determining these times, but after some extensive reviewing/teaching he was doing much better.

The student and I continued to work on math. We also worked identifying nouns and appositional phrases, and whether they were necessary or not. If appositional phrases were necessary, the sentence would not have commas and the extra modifying phrase would help describe the sentence. Without a necessary appositional phrase, the sentence would lose its meaning. If appositional phrases were unnecessary, there were commas between the phrase. The student got more of the exercises right after we went through his worksheet and some online exercises

Today, the student and I went over her homework for math and did some practice drills on her 10 and 11 multiplication tables. For English, she had to learn the core words, write them in cursive, and then use them all in a paragraph. Lastly, we did some reading from "Malory Towers" for her book report.

The student completed her math homework. It covered the topics of greater than, less than, and equal to. After, she wrote in her journal about her day. She then did a timed addition math worksheet. She is always excited to work on addition, but does not like subtraction at all. My goal is to get her to enjoy subtraction as much as she enjoys addition. After some math practice, we read a chapter in a Junie B. Jones book.
