Cedar Park, TX Test Prep tutoring
We continue to work to sharpen the student's basic math skills. Today we worked some more on complex order of operations (including fractions, roots, and exponents), worked on solving word problems involving ratios and proportions, worked on word problems involving percentages, and learned how to simplify large complex fractions (from the proportions) using prime factorization. I have given her worksheets on number properties, ratios and proportions, and algebra word problems to do for Wednesday

We started the session going over the responses from last time and discussed why the boys chose the answers they selected. We discussed strategies including the process of elimination and plugging in similar words to find the best choices for the blanks in the sentences. Then we practiced a similar exercise from the pre-test in the SAT prep book. Then we selected ten words from choices given on the practice test and the boys were assigned to find the word meanings using word arithmetic, a dictionary or other sources. We finished the session by assigning another essay and discussing writing process strategies, including utilizing a graphic organizer.

We spent almost this entire session going over math problems. She has showed a much improved understanding of f(x) problems but still struggles a little bit when they're not in a straightforward form. She struggled with some of the more difficult problems but with a little bit of coaching, she was able to work through them. She has a tendency to sometimes give up before she attempts the problem, but once she starts working through it she is able to pick it up quickly.

The student completed her practice test and we reviewed it. She was in the 750 range for math and could be higher, since a couple of her mistakes came from not reading carefully. Reading comprehension and vocabulary were both around 650-670. I'd like to see these up around 700. For reading comprehension, she needs to continue to identify evidence in the passage to support her answers. On vocabulary, she's going to start with word roots but we've also decided to start a reading project together, since that's the most organic way to acquire vocabulary. I told her to look at Oliver Twist, Jane Eyre, Little Dorrit and Mill on the Floss to see which appealed to her the most, and that we'd read it together.

I worked with the student on science this time. I wanted to get a feel for her timing on the section and how she was adapting to the new 'rules' for taking the tests. She did pretty well, remembering to move on from problems she could not answer. I also talked to her about the reading test- we did two passages at the end of her session. It is the section she still struggles with the most.

For today's session, I administered a online reading performance based assessment practice test. This test involved the task of literary analysis. The student had to read 2 passages and answer questions. She also had to write essay on the two passages elaborating on the main idea of each passage. She was able to work on her own answering the six questions with a 90% grade. She wasn't able to complete the seventh question, which was the essay, so I assigned it to be completed prior to the next session.
