This is our first meeting so I got myself acquainted with the level of material that the student is working with. After taking a look at a few of the problems, we covered some basic techniques useful in all problem types (dimensional analysis and memorizing units/associated measurements). At this point we went through 2 homework problem sets and a take home assignment making sure to cover a few of each problem type. At the end I instructed the student to complete the rest of the problems on his own.

The student and I worked on naming and making formulas chemical compounds, a concept she was being quizzed on the next day. She told me that she knew how to name acids, and that she had an easier time creating formulas rather than naming formulas. She had a worksheet, that I watched her complete and helped her along the way. I was able to identify that she could name metal-nonmetal, acids, and nonmetal-nonmetal compounds but had difficulty with the polyatomic ions, oxoanions, and the charges. I was able to come up with a way for her to remember the prefixes, and suffixes that go with oxyanions, and she got all of her polyatomic ions correct before I left.

Today we did preparation for the final exam. She worked on a lot of problems about acid-base equilibrium, buffer solution, chemical equilibrium. She solved pH calculation for strong acids, weak bases, strong bases, weak bases and buffer solutions. She used Le Chatelier's principle to predict the direction of equilibrium shift upon addition of acids and bases. She did a better job in solving the problems. I gave her some questions to solve about chemical kinetics and properties of solutions and I will evaluate the answers on Thursday.
