The student and I continued our work on the critical reading and math sections of the SAT. We began with the critical reading. He is improving with his sentence completion. He went 4/6 here, and his two mistakes came out of a mistake in organizing the relationship of the words, not a misunderstanding of the vocabulary (the word bank seems to be helping). As far as the passage completion is going, he still has a tendency to misread relationships in the passage, but he is still improving week by week (time might be a factor as several of his correct responses came after time was completed). We then proceeded to the math component. Today, we covered information relating to the definition of bisecting angles, how to write out a word problem, and properties of exterior angles related to a triangle. He is getting better at seeing the questions more abstractly. We will continue next week with question 15 on section 8, exam 7 and continue with the critical reading from section 8, exam 8 and the math on section 7, exam 7.

We focused on math today. We went over word problems, inequalities, and simplifying expressions. The student expressed that she'd like to focus more on big-picture strategy and tips for solving general problems, so we'll focus on that next time. Overall, she is very strong at math. She knows how to perform all the calculations -- she just sometimes needs help at the beginning of the problem. We focused a lot today on how to begin a problem by turning the question into an equation, and we'll be coming back to that in the future.

Today the student and I reviewed a timed Critical Reading practice section she had completed in the previous session. We also practiced writing and math questions together, and the student did some more timed practice on her own. We also worked on figuring out the definitions of unknown vocabulary words using their context. The biggest point-reducer for the student still seems to be vocabulary, which she can definitely improve with the help of notecards or a definitions list (as I've seen her do already).

We began today's meeting by reviewing a handful of practice questions and unfamiliar vocabulary words that she encountered on her practice test sections, but she's generally doing very well and doesn't need explanations for most of these problems. We took a close look at a few specific concepts that she was concerned about (sector areas, arc lengths, and dual reading passages), and I gave her specific problems to test her knowledge of each area. Today I also introduced two new sets of vocabulary words and quizzed her on her previous vocab list. We concluded the session with several reading comprehension passages, all of which she is tackling with speed and confidence. For homework, she's going to complete another practice test and correct it to review with me on Monday. I'm very pleased with her hard work, and she's exactly on track.

The student and I continued working on the math section by reviewing a practice test she took. This week we spent the most time on finding areas and volumes of irregular shapes, and solving problems with special triangles.

We finished the chapter on additional topics in math in the book: this included learning about angles measured in radians and converting between radians and degrees; also about arc length, the equations of circles, and imaginary numbers (including how to simplify fractional expressions containing imaginary numbers in the denominator). Then we worked through example 12 in the next chapter (Sample Math Questions). I suggested that the student should look into getting some of the mostly newly published books specifically dealing with the new SAT math.
