Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This week, I worked with the student on preparing for her exam on the uses of the subjunctive. We went through the uses one by one, as I helped explain the meaning of it again if she was unclear on it, went through how to form/recognize that particular usage, and then gave her some example sentences to translate. The student had particular difficulty with the jussive/volitive/hortatory subjunctive, so we spent a good deal of time on those, which should generally be easy to recognize, since their main verb is in the subjunctive, unlike the other uses of the subjunctive."
"The student and I spent most of our time reviewing for his upcoming midterm. I guided him on a mixed-review through translation sentences, grammar identifications and verb conjugations. I also had the student practice forming and translating the various tenses of the subjunctive. He expressed confusion about the passive voice, so we spent extra time bouncing between the active and passive voices in both Latin and English. The student did a great job approaching the purpose clauses and indirect questions I asked him to translate and he has a firm grasp on the personal endings."
"We covered the parts of English sentences, and we noted how we would translate the constituent parts into Latin. Then we embarked on the task of translating English sentences into Latin. These exercises built and will continue to build the student's confidence in recognizing Latin grammar."
"This session we discussed the material we will cover in our upcoming tutoring sessions. We will be working through various grammatical concepts as well as vocabulary. We spent the session practicing synopses in the present, imperfect, and future tenses using verbs from chapters 24 and 25."
"This was our first session after the break. We reviewed the first four chapters of the book. The student remembered most of it. I have asked him to continue reviewing noun endings for our next session and to complete exercise 5 from chapter 4. I have also asked him to bring his final from last semester to our next session so that I can get a better idea of what kinds of questions his teacher asks on graded assignments."
"We continued translating passages and reviewed some material from the past (personal pronouns, superlatives, and so on). The student should review the vocabulary from his book and review notes from previous sessions, particularly on prepositions and participles."
