Student 1: She is so creative. The plots for stories that she comes up with are so impressive! She has these original ideas that are so amazing! We worked on inserting details into the story to help the reader picture what you are writing about. She has such a great ability to describe scenes and people, so we are working on using the talent in her writing. She did a great job today! Student 2: He wrote a great essay on war strategies in the Civil War for me today. I had instructed him last week to focus on transitions between paragraphs, and he did an excellent job in his essay for today. His transitions were smooth, and he had done exactly what I asked him to do. He is a very fast learner! We then talked about the different styles of writing that he will need to know for high school, such as expository, persuasive, fiction, etc. We will work on these types of writing and fine tune his ability to write for each style.

The student and I had another terrific session on Wednesday evening. He had drafted a couple of new sections for his Fishbowl response to The Giver, and we read those and worked on revising them together. In general, our edits focused on providing more specific details to offer evidence that reinforced the points he was trying to get across in the essay. We also continued to work on improving the paper's flow through transitions, sentence structure, and elegant turns of phrase. He also wrote a new paragraph during our session, and we revised it together. With the paper then complete, we reread it and made some final revisions to ensure it was in excellent shape to be turned in on Friday. I asked him if he was proud of the final product and he said he was; he said he's excited to hear how his teacher responds to the essay. He said he's going to keep reading for 30-45 minutes each day over the next week. He said he did so for most days last week, but I encouraged him to make time to read every single day, and he said he'd try to do so.

I helped the student polish up his poetry assignment. He was required to write 10 different poems, including a sonnet, free verse, dictionary, and other types designed to test his skills in composition, grammar, and vocabulary. His composition skills are surprisingly very good for someone who has just started making creative compositions, and is stronger at it than prose so far.
