The student had a final paper for her course that required selecting a company and analyzing the income statement and balance sheet using course topics. In preparation for the session, she sent me 2 documents, including the paper requirements and the financials for her chosen company. We first discussed analyzing the financials using horizontal analysis of the income statement and balance sheet. Horizontal analysis shows changes from a base year. The project also required calculations of current ratios, quick ratios and cash to current liabilities for the balance sheet accounts. After the calculations were complete, we discussed the details that needed to be included in the paper. We went through how to interpret the calculations, what the trends of the calculation told about the company, and how the ratios related to liquidity. Other questions related to a recommendation of whether to invest in the company and what risks the company could face. The student will also include an overview statement, industry comments, and competitor identification that we did not discuss during our session. She was very quick to understand the calculations, interpret the trends, and understand concepts of the liquidity ratios. She mentioned that she has improved her grade by 2 grades since starting tutoring with me. She was a quick study on everything we went through and needed only a short discussion and some examples to clarify the topics.
