"First we reviewed what we did the last time. The student does have an incredible memory. She was able to pick up very quickly the amount of material we have covered since last time. She learned a few new vocab words today: sheep, pencil, pen, up, middle, and down. Then I asked her to practice the "Mei Zhou"ù Chinese book to work on the strokes. The last thing we did was conversation. We engaged in a conversation with self introductions and questions about zodiac, name, and age. The new theme is: "help" and "I need help." The task for next time is storytelling; we will tell each other a story only with Chinese and body language, and the other has to catch it right. Hopefully she'll like this and do well."
"The first student learned to say his needs in Chinese: I am hungry, I am thirsty, I am sleepy, I am happy, and so on. The other two students learned 15 different quantifiers in Chinese, and describing the quantities of objects, e.g. 1 person, 1 apple, 1 dog, 1 fish, 1 computer, 1 flower, etc. They adapted to them very quickly even though the quantifiers are usually not used in English."
"The student had no homework and no upcoming quizzes or tests; however, he does have a big presentation relating to their new unit on Latin American art. He is assigned to do it with a partner where they are required to select an artist and do a presentation on their life and work. He and his partner have already chosen an artist, so I thought it would be a good idea to begin the research and start formulating a plan for how/what to present. He has to tweak the PowerPoint slides and show it to his partner and have him memorize the materials. He did a good job using the vocabulary words from the unit to incorporate into the presentation."
"The student has an upcoming exam, so we reviewed present, preterite, and conditional tenses, as well as reflexive pronouns. I helped her learn some strategies, and I gave her some extra practice and two book suggestions."
"The student has her final exam, so we went through all the topics that she covered in her class and practiced the parts that she felt were the most difficult. She actually comprehends and uses all the vocabulary and grammar very well."
