Catalina Foothills, AZ Latin tutoring
This week, we again worked on translating exercises from the textbook, but we're working ahead on what the student is going to cover in class, rather than reviewing material he'd already covered. This meant that we encountered more vocabulary he didn't know, although in this case much of that was vocabulary not yet introduced in his class textbook. As the sentences were utilizing the subjunctive, we did some quick review of the four different tenses of the subjunctive and how they're formed and utilized, as I continue to try to help recognizing these things so they become natural for him.

We covered subject-verb agreement and noun-adjective agreement. We discussed strategy for the test tomorrow: Start with the verb of the sentence, find the subject (if there is one, it will be in the nominative), then find the direct object (which will be in the accusative).

We continued focusing on translation skills and understanding the grammar, idioms, and idiosyncrasies of Latin texts. The student is improving in his understanding of the Latin and is fairly decent at translating, though he needs to work on paying attention to case endings.

This chapter of the OLC introduced the imperfect tense and perfect tenses of verbs. I worked with the student on a "timeline" to help him understand the different aspects of the past tenses in Latin, and had him perform some drills changing present tense verbs to the appropriate perfect and imperfect forms. The other half of the session was dedicated to translating the reading samples provided in the textbook. This was a long but productive session, and densely packed with new material; I assigned plenty of practice over the winter break to try to help him retain as much as possible.

The student worked on his homework, and then I reviewed an earlier chapter with him. Particular points of focus were the different meanings of in + the ablative case ("in") and in + the accusative ("into"), how to figure out what the subject of a sentence is based on the verb ending, and how to deal with vocabulary (first try to guess based on known words, then look up if necessary). In the future, I hope to continue devoting part of our sessions to reviewing earlier chapters, because I believe this will help him become more confident about the structure of the language. I also advised him and his mother about test preparation strategies. For example, I think he might benefit greatly from making flashcards for vocabulary (including all principal parts of verbs) and looking over them each day for a short period of time, preferably reading the Latin words aloud.
