Session Summaries by English Tutors

Catalina Foothills, AZ English tutoring
This session started with a review of concepts covered at last session. I was impressed that he remembered, and used, my "tricks" to correctly answer all I asked about. Great job! Following the brief review, I gave him an 95-question assessment to complete. We reviewed the assessment, addressing the questions he got wrong, and targeted those areas for further attention. I left him with a few worksheets, with the expectation they are to be completed by our next session.

For this session, the student and I started the unit on Romeo and Juliet. We watched a few videos that explained how to read and understand the complicated, poetic language of Shakespeare. After she finished the introductory section, she completed the accompanying assessment. Then, we began reading Act 1 of Romeo and Juliet. Because she had already read the play, we breezed through the two accompanying assessments. At the end of the session, I assigned an assignment that she needs to complete before our next session.

I gave the student a reading comprehension practice to get warmed up while I looked over the writing assignment he completed over the week. Afterwards, we went over both the comprehension and the writing, and I provided grammar lessons based on the errors I saw with his work. He discussed commas and after a few lessons and examples, he seemed to have a much better grasp of it. Finally, we practiced our spelling words from last time and he remembered them well enough that I added a few new words to his list to memorize.

We reviewed the student's most current draft of his "definition essay" on the "Millennial" generation; made some adjustments to the order of the argument and added a couple of new ideas to move toward the conclusion.

We talked about two of the student's college essays today. He needed to rework the essays in terms of content. We focused on dissecting the prompts to make sure that we could address them in his response. Then, he brainstormed ideas and organization. He had some really great ideas for the first essay, so he's going to rewrite portions of the essays tonight and tomorrow. I noted a lot of progress in the depth of his ideas and responses to the prompt. They were much more well developed and clear.
