Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today the student showed me her homework. She made a video of what we covered from last two sessions, the topic Household. She almost did all the words and phrases correctly, and she could self-correct when reading, which is good progress. After that, we did the normal session, and today I brought a new, but not completely new topic, shopping. This session is aimed at combining the learned vocabularies, in real-life language use. We reviewed vocabularies, and went over the new words. She has a good recognition of most of the words that she saw in pinyin, and I tried to make more conversations, and asked more questions, when going through all the words. I intend to have her both, get familiar with the new knowledge, and retain the old. Overall, she did a great job today. She really enjoyed the video I showed at the end, about shopping in the supermarket in Mandarin."
"We did the lesson 2 homework together. We learned some sentence structures, such as make sure... otherwise; Although... luckily. I also introduced some Chinese culture, such as Chinese like to drink hot water. She feels more confident than before."
"Today she didn't want to learn or write any characters, so I used several games to practice what we've learnt before. The intention was still to exercise the writing of the characters. I also introduced a new game: backgammon. After we did several rounds with only dots, then I substituted dots to characters so that way she can still learn new vocab and practice the old. At the end we played Chinese chess for 2 rounds. The first round I made it equal, and the second I let her win. Her confidence with playing came back again."
"In this session, we continued to work on Lesson 4--nationality. We did a quick review of Y/N questions and country names. Then we had several dialogue practice, which also covered several drills we learned in previous lessons. We also talked about sides in Chinese characters, their functions and so on. Then we learned some single characters and some words about going to school/work. We also had a discussion with regard to the pronunciation of two combined forth tones. We started lesson Five in the end and we are going to continue Lesson Five next time."
"I first worked with Student 1 on his Mandarin and science homework. I then went over a new grammatical construction with Student 2: how to say doing two things simultaneously. I gave him some examples of how to use it and had him come up with a few on his own."
"We went over speaking questions because the student has a test tomorrow. We went over how to answer the questions in grammatically correct sentences. He was able to hear the question and answer back in Chinese. He knew the answers to all the questions by the end."
