"Today, the student and I practiced upper and lower sums to approximate area under a curve, as well as finding infinite limits of sums in sigma notation. Upper and lower sums were a little tricky at first, but she got the hang of those quickly. Constructing the sigma expressions for the infinite limits proved more challenging; however, by the time we'd finished, the student was showing considerable gains in both her skills and her confidence."
"Went over few problems from last test, then went ahead in the book, covering topics the teacher hasn't covered in class yet, including: power rule, product/quotient rules, chain rule, implicit differentiation, derivatives of trig (and inverse trig) functions, derivatives of logs, and the logarithmic differentiation technique."
"The student has a quiz tomorrow and wanted me to help her prepare for it. The quiz covers optimization, as well as finding extreme values and inflection points. We spent most of our time focusing on optimization because she was having issues with setting up the equations and solving them. We worked through a few problems and by the end she felt much better about them. We spent a little time on inflection points, but since the process is very similar to finding extreme values, she was able to do them with little difficulty. We will meet on Tuesday to go over new material."
"The student and I did both calculus and physics today. He's making progress in one dimensional motion there. Calculus looks much the same way, and we covered more limits and asymptotes there today."
"We took this chance to catch up on some concepts she did not understand. We reviewed transformations today, starting with vertical and horizontal transitions, reflections, rotations around the X and Y axis, and well as stretches and compressions. There were a couple of real "ah ha" moments when she understood a basic concept that she had missed previously. We also worked with inequalities. We then went to work on several problems that she couldn't do for homework. She was able to complete each problem with her new learning and skills."
"The session went well. There were some new concepts she brought forth. Graphing all of the function and derivative values was the main focus. She was able to see the patterns which constitute the shapes of functions relative to their derivatives. We went over quotient rule briefly. She was able to grasp the exponential function derivative rule after a few practice problems. Chain rule was also introduced."
