Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Casa Grande, AZ Phonics tutoring
The student and I met for 1.5 hours. We reviewed the cross country article that he wrote for the sports editor. We brainstormed ideas for his upcoming photo compilation. The student completed a creative writing assignment of 500 words. We critiqued it together and agreed he will expand on it at a later date.

I planned to focus today's session on using small moments and specific details to grab the reader's attention. The first student was adamant that he had never heard of small moments, but I think he may have been pulling my leg. The second student was happy and willing to talk about the things he might write about. At various points when I offered him two example sentences or ideas, he was quick to reply by saying which he thought would be more interesting to read and why, but he had difficulty making that manifest on the page. During his turn, the third student was quick to define small moments, and he enjoyed and excelled at choosing which of the examples I gave was the more attention-grabbing detail... and also in explaining why one was a stronger choice than the other. However, he had some difficulty doing this in his own writing; he gets very caught up in telling the narrative out loud, and much of that gets lost before it gets to the page. For next time, I have some worksheets that will help the boys practice this idea one sentence at a time.

Today I helped the student brainstorm and organize his thoughts, as he began writing his film analysis assignment. He wrote an introduction to the paper and started his rough draft, which is due on Wednesday. We will meet again on Monday to go over it.

We began today's session with a familiar read aloud. The student did well with comprehension on this. Then we practiced clocks. We made a clock on the whiteboard, and she filled in the numbers. We explored more challenging times today, going beyond times on the hour to times on the half hour, quarter hour, and even :20 and :55. Her understanding of time and skip counting by 5 has been increasing dramatically. We finished by comparing numbers using a deck of cards. Rather than practicing with "more than" number sentences, we did "less than" today. We'll continue to work on this to build her flexibility between more than and less than.

We began with reading a short story online and answering 10 multiple choice questions relating to the story. The student asked me to define the word "prevent." She read the list of her 3rd grade sight words and got 100%. She then played a short vowel game on the computer where she had to create words using different consonant blends and vowels. We worked on the phonics flashcards for sm, sn, sp, st, and str. Then, we reviewed what had been read from the MLK Jr. book and did a picture walk. We also went over the aspects of nonfiction. She then worked on the 2nd grade reading flashcards (verbs, tense, synonyms). In math, we worked on measurement, multiplication, and her math homework.

We completed a review of the student's letter/sound and word recognition skills. She was able to successfully identify CVC/VC and VCC words along with word blending and segmenting activities. We used a reading program scope and procedures as guide to instruction. She's a very active student with excellent decoding skills.
