Session Summaries by Latin Tutors

Casa Grande, AZ Latin tutoring
The students and I reviewed the worksheet I had created for them today, which dealt with blank verb charts, a synopsis of the verb "to be" and a chart detailing how to use each of the four principal parts. Both of them are becoming much more comfortable using the principal parts correctly and being able to form the appropriate form and tense. They have also become adept at recognizing what conjugation a verb belongs to and how to use different cases of nouns. Additionally, we reviewed their recent quiz. We also reviewed how to translate various tenses and voices of Latin words into English. They also have a quiz on the relative pronoun so I went through and explained how relative pronouns are used in relative clauses in English and how to go about matching an appropriate relative pronoun form to the antecedent noun. I encouraged them to memorize these forms while recognizing that many of the forms share endings with other noun declension case endings. We concluded the session with some exam practice.

Today we finished chapter 12 and began working on chapter 13. Chapter 13 introduces comparative adjectives, so the first part of the session was spent in going over these, with special emphasis on the commonly used irregular comparatives. The reading for chapter 12 was somewhat on the short side, so we were able to finish it all in one stretch. Next session we will do the exercises; I noticed the student needed more practice with his relative pronouns and 4th/5th declension adjectives, so I told him to review those in lieu of assigning new practice exercises.

During this session, the student and I spent one hour on college essays and one hour on her summer reading book. In the first hour, we brainstormed verbally and made detailed outlines for two of her Common App essays, with specific attention to how and when she would incorporate both anecdotes and reflections into the structure of her essays. Next, we moved on to her summer reading book, Atonement. We made a timeline of important events, learned about some of the literary terms often taught alongside this text, played games with some key vocabulary words from the text, and perused a study guide for the book that we found online. Next session, we will be working on ACT essays and the reading/ writing sections of the ACT.

In this session, we covered fingerspelling, numbers, colors, and how to properly sign them with the correct hand shape, palm orientation, location, movement, and expression. The student did a fantastic job with all of these topics and will be able to use our work to build toward a more complete usage of American Sign Language. We also discussed community and online resources to help her practice and build her skills in her free time. This entire session was a win because we were able to re-kindle an excitement for ASL.

She finally used a verb on her own! Two of them, in fact. While walking around with the camera playing a game with her, she used the word "perpatai" which more or less means "walking". Success! She knows nouns and adjectives, now it's time to get her to use verbs. Next week, I'm going to charge up the laptop, and be moving around more, we'll see if we can get her to use verbs because with those, she'll be able to speak on her own rather than just listen and answer. She also knows trwgei (to eat), which is great! I'm very pleased, we're making progress.
