Session Summaries by English Tutors

Casa Grande, AZ English tutoring
In this session, the student read two chapters from his book. We then continued working on the rough draft of the essay. We made a lot of progress this session. He finished writing his body paragraphs as well as the introduction and conclusion paragraphs. I was very pleased with his progress and I can tell that writing is getting easier for him. When we edit the rough draft in our next session I am hoping to help him create more clear and descriptive sentences by going over the use of adjectives in writing. Overall, the session ended up being productive.

The first student and I started the session by going over his science quiz. We went over each question and discussed the right answer. We strategized how he could look over his work to make sure he had covered everything. We then worked on his vocabulary book. He did very well with this week's words, and his handwriting had improved from the last time we did this exercise. He also did a nice job correcting some mistakes without my help. The second student and I worked on her vocabulary words and did another one of the activities on her list. She wanted me to quiz her while she used her flash card letters to spell the words. She did excellent on this and knew how to spell every word. We then worked on filling in the number chart in her workbook, and got up to 80. She has done a great job noticing patterns in the chart, which has helped her to fill in numbers.

The student and I met for 1.5 hours. We discussed his subjects in school, most recent school assignments, goals, ambition, and favorite activities. We reviewed his research paper, covered his history quizzes and discussed an upcoming English project in great detail. We uncovered ways for him to incorporate writing into his daily life by writing about things he enjoys such as writing captions for the photographs he submits for the school newspaper and submitting a previously requested cross country article to the sports editor. We identified ideas for his upcoming English project (pending teacher approval) and I also assigned him a small creative writing project to get a better idea of his writing strengths/weaknesses.

I worked with Student 1 to prepare for her science presentation. She did a great job despite a lot of difficult scientific terms in the presentation. I then continued working with Student 2 on reading aloud as a means of developing vocal expressiveness and clarity. He made a lot of progress on reading a short story and was able to give an impromptu 2-minute speech at the end of the lesson with improved public speaking abilities.

I worked with the student on a rough draft for her essay on Othello. She is assimilating the information from the text well, and benefits from discussing the material out loud. The first whole draft is due before we meet again, so I told her that she could reach out to me for an online tutoring session over the weekend if she felt like she needed that. She seems comfortable with the basic formatting requirements for her essay.
