We went over the student's college admission resume and finalized formatting. It was already very well formatted, but we changed some placement around, and I gave him suggestions on how to add info and background to it. We discussed college applications and whether or not he should try and take the SAT again to get over a 1400 to better boost his application. We also discussed the possibility of taking SAT IIs to enhance his application if his top schools say they're recommended (or if they require them). I also let him know I would talk to anyone I know who went there, and see if they can say anything to admissions about recommending him. Next weekend, he is going to show me his rough draft for his third essay, and over this week, he will work on his resume objective and email it to me.

We went over the student's GPA, which may in fact be a 3.0. We also went over interview questions and cleaned up the responses so that he could draw from them should any essay questions call for that. We discussed getting into physical therapy school. I believe he is an excellent candidate and should not sell himself short, especially since he received an A on all of his prerequisites. Furthermore, he is an older and more experienced grad school candidate, which is usually looked positively upon.

We went over the student's three college essays he wrote recently - the ideas are solid, but need a bit of polishing still. We generally have good narratives for each one. He is able to repeat this information well and believes what he is saying, so the essays are just a matter of committing the thoughts to paper. We discussed potential ideas for his fourth paper. It seems like he has a good start on this. I will check up on these essays as the week moves forward. When he gets the essays done, we will edit for grammar and mechanics, but for now, the most important thing is to get the ideas down on paper. He is doing much better with speaking his mind and getting his ideas out.

We went over what the student was looking to get out of these sessions, and what direction he'd like to take going forward. We made a plan for the week, and arranged to each do some reading/writing that we can talk about next week. I will send the student a sample college essay to read, and he will send me the draft he has, along with his freewriting on the prompt on "place" that I gave him.

We worked on the 3 college essays the student has written. On all three essays, I have been encouraging her to employ the technique of "show, not tell" to a much greater degree. Her college supplement needs the most work, which she can accomplish by finding ways to frame her passions through opportunities provided there. This week, she will work most heavily on the Common App and supplement.

We worked on the student's second personal letter to go with his college applications. He has great material and many strong points to make, but he often gets tangled up in abstract language. We worked through some of his less successful sentences, and focused on some of the best narrative passages of his story. When he sat down for me and wrote, and thought through, the sequence of events in his 'story,' he wrote very well and quickly and honestly. The thesis of his brief essay needs a bit more work, but his closing paragraph has some great stuff in it. He should beware of comparative structures in his sentences, as these cause him (and many young writers) the most trouble. He's a nice kid, works hard, and will do well.
