Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I responded to one of her peers' Blackboard discussion posts regarding politically-motivated art of the 1960s. We then started work on a psychology assignment in which she is required to find a scholarly article regarding the intersection of art and psychology and review the article in a four-page paper. We did some research and decided on an article discussing the utility of art therapy as a treatment for improving autistic children's social skills. We then drafted an outline of the paper and wrote the introduction."
"The student and I worked on developing the thesis statement for his paper on The Last Unicorn. I brought him a handout on the purpose of the thesis statement and how to write one. We looked at some examples and discussed what he will communicate in his thesis statement. We jotted down several ideas for the statement and then made some attempts at writing some together. We evaluated the samples we had generated, and I left him with one to edit and revise. The next step is to write a working draft of the thesis statement and to begin developing an essay draft with paragraphs which support the thesis."
"Since this was our first session, the student and I talked about how he was doing in school (very well), what he liked and disliked, and why he had a hard time writing. We talked about what his goals were, and how we might make writing more interesting. He seemed interested in creative writing, but said he had a hard time coming up with ideas. To get a sense of his writing, I asked him to write the story of something exciting that had happened to him. He wrote about his birthday. It was, as his mother had warned me, lacking in details. To help him think more carefully about details, we worked on developing a character and a world that he could write about. I hope that if he is consciously thinking about a world very different from our own and a character different from himself, he will be more careful to give details to flesh out his writing. We worked on establishing a setting and character traits, then finished the session by writing another birthday story, from the character's perspective. It was definitely an improvement. We will continue to work on filling out and writing out this world next week, as well as any school writing assignments he has."
