Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I spent a good amount of time reviewing vocabulary. He is starting to pick up the words, and more importantly is getting better at guessing at questions when he doesn't know all the words. We also focused on some math topics that he has been struggling with. There are some types of questions that only really appear on these exams, so these questions are unfamiliar in structure to most students. But once he spends some time with them he seems to pick up the concepts."
"I was extremely pleased with the student this week in that she did all of the homework that I asked her to do. In grading her work she did EXTREMELY well and showed a lot of progress in her math and reading comprehension. She was able to finish the sections in a good amount of time and made sure to take her time to go over all her answers. I also went over two essays that I asked her to write and she has great ideas and can express them very well. I gave her more homework on verbal, reading comprehension, and math which I would like her to do timed as well."
"We started by spending an hour on the student's math homework. She is currently working on exponents, and I helped her with an assignment on scientific notation. Her grasp of the material is excellent. We then spent the next hour on another reading practice exam. She does a good job with the material."
"The student had already taken a practice test, so he knew he wanted to focus on vocabulary. We may do some reading comprehension in the future as well. I have no concerns at all; he's a great young man, quite focused and interested. We went through the exercises in his placement exam book that he had already done, talked about roots, prefixes, and suffixes, talked through several words he didn't know and made associations to things he does know, and talked about strategies. I told him at the outset that I would ask him at the end to name some things he learned, and he was able to do that (slow down and think about the four options - not just choose his first gut instinct; and think about words that are similar that he knows -- such as he knew skeptical, but didn't connect it to skeptic). I asked him to look up two words that we ran out of time to talk about, and also to keep an index card when he's reading novels, to jot down vocabulary on that."
"The goal for today's session was to go over the last few math concepts we had yet to review for the assessment. We successfully finished reviewing geometry; mean, median, mode and range; and reading graphs. The following sessions will be based on the Reading and writing sections of the assessment as well as completing practice exams."
"Tonight, we covered the written portion of the placement exam. We talked over the things a good answer should cover, the appropriate structure for the essay, and tips to make the writing sparkle, as well as timing. The student feels fairly comfortable with the writing section overall, but she will need to practice timing because she has never done timed essay writing before."
"We reviewed a selection of questions on a sample diagnostic Upper Level placement exam covering all areas of math and ELA. Also, reviewed homework questions and explained why he missed certain reading comprehension questions; particularly involving inferences. Covered several areas of mathematics that the student needed assistance with including percentages, proportions, slopes, trig relationships and several others. Left the student with many pages of homework."
"We discussed a series of history lessons the student was expected to know in anticipation of a coming history exam. He has ongoing history work in the lead up to his test."
"The student and I practiced foiling and system of equations. We compared similar triangles and wrote expressions for multiplying and adding consecutive integers. We continued to work on timing and knowing when to skip questions and when to continue."
"I administered a practice section of the reading comprehension section to the student. We discussed strategies and how to pace the questions and readings. She was able to complete the section in the time allowed. I also had her do a practice of the written section. We then reviewed her outline and also her essay and discussed ways she could improve future essays. We also did some additional planning on her long essay. She is improving in her writing and her ability to more efficiently work under timed conditions. She was going to continue working on her admission essays so we could discuss them at our next session."
"During this session we worked on math problems. We discussed test taking strategies, and I reinforced strategies that we have used over the past sessions. The student has a good understanding of the math, however still needs to review factors, fractions, decimals and basic operations with numbers other than integers. Additionally he would benefit from reinforced use of algebraic algorithms as well as a conceptual understanding of basic geometry topics (i.e.. area, perimeter, and volume)."
"The student and I went over some new vocabulary words today and made flash cards. We also talked about Algebraic expressions and how to combine like terms - we did some matching with cards and also looked at some problems she missed from the online assessment that were on the same topic. We looked over her math test results and determined which types of problems we want to work on in the future."
