Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today the student and I discussed and practiced good notetaking techniques for his history class. He already had a great handle on the required method of notetaking and just needed affirmation. We also did his math homework.
After all of his work was done we reviewed the extra credit questions that he had missed on his math exam. I went over the concept of combining like terms across the equal sign with him, and we will review that again this week to make sure he has retained it.
He was really happy with the results (a 106% on his exam) of our study/review session last week. I was too! I would like to review his English exam with him this week to see what he still needs work on."

"The student and I finished her previous test, going over questions she had missed. I also made a worksheet for her to "warm up" with, focusing on previous questions and concepts that were still troublesome. We will continue to go through her classroom work and identify areas that are not as strong in mathematics. Overall she is improving already, and I think her confidence is getting better as well!"
"The student and I checked/corrected her homework worksheet, which dealt with rounding large numbers and multiplying complex fractions. Additionally, we did practice problems for some of the student's trouble areas, which included solving equations with variables, tax rates (percentages), and word problems."
"The student and I began by completing his chapter test on sequences and series, which was accomplished with little difficulty. Fortunately, we also had enough time remaining to go over the first two lessons of the next chapter, dealing with some basics of matrix algebra: Matrix addition, scalar multiplication, and matrix multiplication. As I had expected, he understood these operations immediately, and he demonstrated so with quick, flawless work on practice problems."
"The student was studying for an exam tomorrow. We reviewed chapter five in his book. We covered factoring, FOIL, and word problems involving quadratics. I also had some sample assessment questions involving factoring that I left for him to work on."
"The student and I worked on word problems that involved writing and graphing functions and identifying variables. She had few questions on the work and was able to complete it with little assistance. We also worked on her project about George Washington."
"The student had a test today and didn't have any homework so we just reviewed the concepts from the chapter. First we talked about how to determine if an object is accelerating or decelerating from a graph. We then covered Rolle's Theorem and the Mean Value Theorem and did a few practice problems to make sure the assumptions were met, and then we did the calculations. Finally, we did an optimization story problem that was in a different form than she was used to seeing. The problem was to calculate the minimum distance between two traveling ships over a period of time."
"The student and I did a math timed section, which we went over, and a reading comprehension timed section, which we also went over. The student continues to struggle with careless errors on the math section. We discussed the importance of checking work, particularly because he tends to finish early. He found the reading comp difficult and frustrating because there were several stories with unfamiliar vocab. We discussed strategies for identifying words in context."
"Today we focused on reading. He worked on questions that dealt heavily with inferences and main idea. He also worked on the revising and editing part. He did exceptionally well. For our next session he will get a list of spelling words to assist in this area of weakness."
"We went over lesson 4 of the student's book: the topics of family members and their professions. More specifically, we studied how to: 1) describe how many family members there are in one's family. 2) counting words for various professions 3) the words for family members: grandparents, parents, siblings, etc. 4) how to ask "do you have" in 2 different ways. 5) how to ask "how many...do you have"."
"Helped the student study for his test. Organized notes. Had the student teach me the material for comprehension and clarity of thoughts. Covered the major themes in each work. Outlined what he needed to accomplish following our session."
"Great Session! The student started out with an English portion, because we haven't done that in a long time. She took a minute to warm up, but the second short passage was almost perfect. From there, we worked through a Science section She got a 30 on it! She did really well, working methodically through the section and taking her time. We will work on Reading next week, then it's the test!"
