"This morning I gave the student a better assessment to gauge his grammar skills and knowledge. The assessment I have him is a portion of a practice college entrance exam test that asks questions similar to what the standardized assessment exam asks. I gave him 30 minutes to complete the first 36 questions of the assessment. We decided to review each of the questions and spent the next hour doing so. We went over the reasoning behind the correct answers on the questions. I gave him homework and he is to complete the second half of the assessment and write his reasoning for each answer he chooses. I believe that requiring him to record his reasoning will encourage him to think more carefully about the answer he chooses and may improve his score. He is a really sweet boy and is attentive and active during our lessons."
"We started by doing a math section. I can tell that this is the student's weak point, so I plan to do a lot of math practice."
"For our first meeting, I discussed general strategies and started to troubleshoot which areas of the test on which to focus. We also reviewed practice ACT English and Science test sections."
"Today focused on math. We reviewed the questions that the student missed in the diagnostic. Then, we went on to cover the now/later/never approach. The student identified her plan of attack, and will be doing the math from the diagnostic and the science from another prep book for our next meeting."
"The student showed much improvement on her vowel combination quiz! We read and reviewed new vocabulary. Her homework is to use each vowel combination in a word; she can receive bonus points if she uses a word from her reading. Also, she is to use each vocabulary word in a sentence. We will also be introducing new vowel combinations toward the end of next week."
"We went over test strategies, and I gauged the students' math and reading levels. Both girls are competent. For Student 1, it is really just a question of refining her math and reading as much as possible, but she could easily get 1400+ on a good day where she is. Student 2 needs a confidence boost and has some knowledge gaps that she needs to fill."
