Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this session, we continued working on sentence completion practice problems in the workbook. We also began assembling a vocabulary list and reviewed strategies for answering the sentence completion questions and for studying vocab words. The student tends to write down the dictionary definition next to the word, which is helpful but not the best strategy for recall, so we worked on finding word and visual associations for each definition to assist his memory in a high-pressure situation. We are also working on the balancing act between trusting his instincts about words, as he often second-guesses himself away from the correct answer, and moving slowly enough to ensure that he reads everything correctly. Overall, I am extremely pleased with his progress at sentence completions. This was his worst area in the practice test, but he quickly learned to employ strategies such as narrowing down the answer choices and filling in the sentence in his mind. He is now doing quite good at this type of question. I will continue working with him on this question type for at least another session, possibly two, because the earlier he has a chance to learn new vocabulary words, the better off he will be for the test. He also doesn't feel as confident as he should in the vocabulary heavy sections, so my goal is to change that self-concept as quickly as possible."
"The student continues to make very good progress in his assessment test preparation. During this lesson he started his third practice exam. Specifically, he completed the verbal reasoning and reading comprehension sections of the practice test. His scores on these practice exams are staying consistent or going up. Also during this lesson he completed his fifth practice essay. In these completed practice essays, he has demonstrated strong writing abilities. We concluded the tutoring session with vocabulary development and review. He is retaining the new vocabulary that we are reviewing. He is always focused and on task. Thus, our tutoring lessons are always very productive."
"This session was primarily to get to know one another. We went over several practice questions to assess where we are and which areas we'll need to focus on. He was able to complete practice problems in math, quantitative reasoning, reading comprehension, and verbal reasoning during the session. He agreed to complete a practice essay question before our next session. He will need general help in all areas going forward."
"Great job on the test "testez-vous! Chapter 1." You can redo it on your own if you need to. Print out the "vocabulaire en contexte" and watch the videos. Then, complete the exercises. Feel free to get back on the Paris Match website and try out different articles following the same exercises we did together. Remember to watch "Chansons" and complete the lyrics. As time permits, start memorizing the new vocabulary from Chapter 2 Me voici! Tres bien!"
"The student and I worked on Reading selections. We discussed how to attack tone, main idea, and inference questions. He still struggles with non-literal meanings. His attitude is good. I will introduce a 3-step reading strategy for him next time on reading (survey, highlight, summarize). His homework is to continue to work on vocabulary as well as practice reading strategies and verbal strategies on practice tests."
"We worked on speaking with confidence today. The student was very good and willing to use the material to help with Spanish. I am very confident he will speak well on his coming trip."
