The student began today's session with her math homework. She completed this homework without difficulty in about 15 minutes. For the rest of the session, she read from "Brooke the Photographer Fairy," a book I brought from the library that is another book in the "Rainbow Magic" book series by Daisy Meadows. She then wrote her reading log about chapter one of this book. Her reading comprehension in this book is extremely high and she was able to summarize the story without help. I helped her arrange her summary into complex sentences. It seems like she really enjoys reading this book series.

The student and I focused on the AP's rhetorical devices today. We started with the rhetorical devices that authors most often use to affect the meaning and content of a work, including irony, satire, hyperbole, litotes, and euphemism. In this vein, we read a passage by Jonathan Swift, which the student did well to understand and answer some questions about. We then went over rhetorical figures more often used to described an author's stylistic use of rhythm and sound. These included anaphora, asyndeton, alliteration, and assonance. We discussed the use of all these concepts in Shakespeare and in a passage by Hemingway. The student got a really good grasp of author's intentions using these devices. I asked him to send me an old essay so we could go over some essay-writing strategies next week.

The student and I covered lots of ground tonight! We began by discussing the exercises she did for homework last week (particularly her great description of Utility Fog) and the progress she's made on the novel since our last session. We spent most of the rest of the session discussing her three protagonists and doing some mini writing exercises to develop details about them. However, she already seems to have coherent, nuanced character analyses for all three of these protagonists, so for next week she's going to work not on character but instead on figuring out -- and actually writing down! -- what comes next in the novel. I'm emailing her father with a short list of potential writing prompts to help her out with this task. Good work tonight!

We started with an introduction of personal information, cardinal numbers, forms of identification, and meeting people. The students mentioned that they needed more help in pronunciation and verbs. We also talked about different things that they could do at their jobs in order to practice more speaking English. I will send them an email with extra practice. They want more advanced conversation skills, which I will comply with.
