Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"For this session, the student and I worked through a collection of problems relating to monetary policy, GDP, and bonds. In the past, he had missed exam questions that depended on these subconcepts, so it was certainly beneficial for him to cover them with me. In my observation, he had little trouble understanding the macroeconomic questions, but was struggling somewhat with more quantitative bond questions (yield to maturity, discounting, face value vs price, etc.). I believe that the session was productive due to his genuine interest in the material and willingness to learn. I enjoy working with enthusiastic students, so this meeting was successful in that regard. As far as study skills and problem solving strategies are concerned, I demonstrated how almost all quantitative questions in finance and economics can be solved with a formula of some sort. He missed questions largely because he did not have access to a given formula, so I suggested aggregating all vital formulas and memorizing them if need be before a test. I will be able to assess progress when we meet next."
"We went through the basics in prep for her final next Friday. This included supply and demand, the basic principles of economics, surplus and shortages, and price/quantity controls. She seemed to know all the material well, so we worked through some practice problems."
"The student and I briefly went over normal distributions and then reviewed present worth, annual worth, and internal rate of return. He expressed some concern that he's not doing as well on his post quizzes as he would like so we tried a new strategy. Since he can take the post quizzes at any time and the next one he needs to do was on PW/ AW/ IRR, we agreed to review that today so that he could take his test right after our session and it would be fresh in his mind. We're going to try that going forward and see if it helps with his scores. We had been studying the most recent class material, which is usually a few days ahead of the current post quiz."
"This evening, the student and I went through VR practice sets for synonyms and analogies, as well as RC practice sets for passages of varied types (science, social science, history, literary criticism, poetry, etc.). He is doing great work, especially on his vocabulary practice."
"The student's score from his last ACT was an improvement. Today we reviewed his scores a bit, and we mostly worked on the reading passages. I also gave him a different strategy to practice with."
"We worked through a challenging practice test together first, which the student scored an 88% on, and then we worked on some hand-picked problems in her problem areas. She's doing great, I'm excited to see how she scores on her practice SAT in a few days!"
