Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Much more progress has been made today (close to 7 pages double-spaced had been written). The student also reported that he had started to format some summaries into the needed annotated bibliography entries. I gave feedback and editing on the existing partial draft. Again, we reviewed organization strategy based on "media control methods/techniques" and discussed whether a few more concepts would fit into this framework as new items or sub-items. I verified with the student that the final due date would in fact be on Friday. We scheduled one additional extended session on Thursday. We will continue working on the complete final draft of the whole paper."
"We finished the editing and completion of the student's paper on the American Dream. We needed to shore up a few of his main paragraphs with some more detail that backed up his main theme, and in addition, had to firm up his conclusion paragraph. He had great reference quotes, but added one more that helped improve his thoughts on rising healthcare costs. His idea for this paper was good, and his outline was done well, as was sticking to his original plan of how to construct the paper. Again, he showed some more improvement, which is a real positive."
"This week the student and I worked especially hard on remembering which words ending in "s" require an apostrophe. We did some handwriting practice as well, and the student has showed a lot of improvement in this area! She's more conscious of starting the letters on the line!"
"We continued reviewing ie/ei words to start, going over the student's assignment from last session and making sure he remembered the spelling rule. Then, upon his request, we worked on there/ their/ they're words. This consisted of filling in the blanks of sentences that I provided and having him come up with his own sentences using the correct word. He definitely understands the concept, and is getting much better at checking his work. He wants to keep working on this concept tomorrow, which we will do!"
"We continued to focus on the writing process, with a particular focus of pre-writing. The student was required to backwards plan by outlining a previous essay he wrote. He had to specifically identify the correct and incorrect way to structure his essay according to the model I gave him, and to explain how he would correct the errors. We kept track of his corrections for future writing practice. We also reviewed a "KIM" (keyword, information, memory clue) vocabulary practice chart he completed to determine if he understood the words. The student struggled with putting forth effort to find memory clues, and with writing coherent sentences with the vocabulary words."
"We continued to proofread work communications together. The student's use of articles has vastly improved. She also is now correctly combining sentences using a comma and a coordinating conjunction. She had some difficulty with possessives, so we reviewed rules for when and how to use apostrophes with singular and plural nouns. Another problem area has been hyphens, so we also reviewed rules for those."
