Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student had previously completed the practice essay for the High School exam. I went over her results with her. The student displayed a good innate grasp of essay flow, good grammar, and strong use of sensory information. I encouraged her to go into more detail to flesh out her ideas. I then created a new sample essay topic that she hadn't encountered before and gave her a 30 minute time limit to write an essay - to thus mimic testing conditions. First, the student and I went over how to structure her essay. I encouraged her to take adequate time to plan her ideas before writing and to closely read the essay question, which contained clues on what to include. My assigned essay was more difficult for her, since she wasn't used to working under a time constraint - I think that timing and pacing herself is a key issue for the student, but one we can practice. My biggest criticism was that she needed more specific detail, but the student seemed to grasp this, and this is something we will work on in the future. After our session, I emailed the parent to assign homework (at the parent's request), and asked that she complete the rest of the ELA practice session online. While I want to focus our tutoring time primarily on Writing, I want to make sure that her other ELA skills are up to par (particularly since, after looking at her homework, I think that High School reading comprehension and vocabulary is more challenging than what she is used to at school)."
"Reviewed grammar (prepositions and difference between helping verbs and linking verbs) and helped him with a math lesson."
"This was my first session with this student. It served more for seeing where she was with her writing through her previous work. Her writing skill is very impressive. However, she does show a little bit of trouble with proofreading her work, making punctuation and grammar errors here and there. While working together, I will be proofreading her material with her to help build her skills in catching the errors."
"We started off with our traditional free writing session. The student is learning to use good voice. Then, we concentrated on the book, "Jet Li." He summarized what he read last night, and then we read most of Chapter 4, taking turns. I did extensive explaining of new vocabulary and using context examples."
"We went over an essay he wrote together to show him his strengths and weaknesses. We worked on pulling textual evidence out of a reading passage and using it in a short answer. The student also worked on writing his thesis sentences, so he can improve for his assessment exam essay."
"We went over paragraph writing structure, grammar, and spelling. Multi-syllabic words were a bit of a challenge. The student was very impassioned, as we were writing a persuasive piece about Tom Brady. He will be off to the bookstore as soon he is able. From one draft to the next, he improved considerably. He's progressing well."
