Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over sound waves, beat frequency, and other topics dealing with harmonics. The student knew the material fine, he just needed a little guidance on definitions and certain problems before he took his exam the next day."
"We covered chromosomes, terms such as gene, allele, locus, genome, mutation, haploid and diploid. The student was comfortable with the material, she just needed some clarification about certain terms before her quiz tomorrow. She will read over the homework sheets she received in class to prepare more for the quiz."
"We hit acids and bases most heavily. We went over titration problems (focusing on weak acid, strong base problems) and buffer solutions and practiced recognizing what types of solution would act as buffers. The student will continue to practice for his exam tomorrow. He is extremely bright, and his grasp of the material is quite good. I think he only needs to practice taking complex problems step by step so as not to get mired down."
"We worked on even-numbered problems out of the student's textbook. In previous sessions, we had worked all problems with gases as individual gases. This time, we worked problems containing partial pressure and pressure of water involving wet/dry gas states with variable temperature and pressure. We established that given the mass, converting to moles of everything enables you to calculate total pressure/volume and partial pressure and volume using either: PtotalVtotal=ntotalRT or Vx/Vtotal = Px/Ptotal = nx/ntotal. We are now a bit ahead of the class. The student is going to look a little bit further throughout the week to keep in front of the class."
"We worked on gas laws, stoichiometry, and some periodic trends. We focused on writing out all of the givens, writing units, and making sure sig figs are correct. I will be seeing the student again tomorrow."
"We worked on general chemistry review, focusing on interpreting the periodic table, related topics (weighted average atomic mass; isotopes and neutron counts; ion formation; etc.), and Lewis electron dot structure diagrams, as well as a few other topics in review for an upcoming test. Thanks!"
