During this session we went over ionic and covalent bonds. We focused on the differences between these two types of bonds and how to tell which kind of bond a given compound contains. We then practiced naming both covalent and ionic compounds. The student has a strong understanding of the general naming schemes. We then reviewed some of the properties of waves. We discussed transverse and longitudinal waves and reviewed several of their properties. We considered the amplitude, wavelength, frequency, period, and speed of waves and noted how some of these characteristics interact.

We reviewed simple harmonic motion of springs from our last session, and related those concepts to pendulums. We spent most of the time on conservation of energy for springs, both assuming simple harmonic motion and using geometry. She is doing very well with the concepts from the last session. We ended the session discussing the motion of a pendulum in an elevator or a car, and there was some confusion there, so we will have to review the concept next time.

We discussed data charts that she was given and went over some changes that should be made on her graphs. Then we discussed the relevance of each graph and what they were comparing. I sent her my notes that were taken during the session and offered to proofread her project before it is due.

We discussed eight different types of statistical tests, including the sign test, the Wilcoxon signed rank test, dichotomous population proportions, goodness of fit, contingency tables, multiple population proportions, and one way ANOVA. The student's biggest concern was how to know when to use which type of test. We used different examples involving bags of marbles to identify which test would be the most appropriate for what we are trying to measure.

We discussed electron configuration, including valence shell, core shell/noble gas, abbreviated electron configuration, s/p/d orbitals and order of electron filling (including the PYRAMID mnemonic), the octet rule and why atoms either gain or lose electrons, definition of dissociate, difference between ionic and neutral compounds, monoatomic anions, polyatomic anions, oxidation states, including multiple oxidation states of transition metals, and cation and anion names. She seemed to have a great attitude, and had a good grasp of the material (she was able to answer most of the questions on her own). I basically did a refresher on rules for how you build up the electronic structure of an atom. I also went into more detail/context where I thought it would help, especially the use of the Periodic Table to get clues on the charges of the anions and cations rather than just memorizing them.
