Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We started by going over some reading comprehension passages I had assigned, which the student did perfectly. We discussed how she had gone over the passages and questions and she explained how she had to read each one twice. We practiced these skills for the next few passages."
"I met with the student for our second session on Monday. I had asked him to do a full timed test (not including writing) for practice. We then started working on the writing section of the assessment. We talked about strategies on how to go through it, including timing for planning and revising. We then worked through Practice Test 1's writing together. Next I had him spend 10 minutes on Practice Test 2's writing portion for purely planning purposes. He did very well on considering organization and staying on topic. We discussed ways to use details from real life to strengthen his explanations and arguments. I asked him to do 8 minutes of planning, 16 of writing, and 7 for revision. Next we moved on to Science, which is one of his stronger subjects. It has 7 units so each unit gets approximately 5 minutes in the test. There may be some that have 5, 6, or 7 questions so it may not be exact. We then worked through Practice test 2- section 1 together without timing. I then had him do practice test 2- section 3 with timing. We then did another under timed conditions and he did very well. We then went back to Reading and discussed his test answers and how he felt that went and did a timed test."
"Sunday was the student's first session. We began by discussing her goals for the test. She is also taking the writing portion of the exam for the first time on Saturday. I explained some overall strategies on how to approach the writing section. Because of her excellent scores on the English and Reading portions of the exam, I am confident that she will do extremely well. She has a strong grasp of the content that will be tested. I walked her through several strategies on how to use the answer choices to help ascertain the correct answer. For our next session, she plans to do a practice test and bring specific questions. Our task for that session will be to identify the topic that each question is testing."
