Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Our efforts this session were directed towards devising an effective and realistic study plan for the student. I introduced her to a math set and we discovered a new equation graphing feature on the web that excited the student."
"The student scored a 94 on her math test, which is a big improvement! She said that the strategies we developed last time--exercising before the test, making sure she understands the charts before she reads the questions, and doing the whole test twice--really helped her. We went over the questions she missed. Then we worked on organizing her planner. She's been keeping a lot of different school papers in it, so I advised her to get folders for each of her subjects and to use her homework folder. I also told her to use the calendar section of her planner, in addition to the daily planner, to help her see what's coming up over the next few weeks. I want her to write her assignments multiple times in different places so that she won't miss anything. She wrote out her finals schedule and we developed a study schedule so that she can start studying for her finals in advance. Then we worked together on a social studies homework assignment. We also practiced some math in preparation for the finals next month."
"Today we looked at his Geometry review because he has a test on Thursday. It was a long review with a lot of topics to cover."
"Covered the idea of taking notes while reading, talked through how best to understand concepts, and reinforced group learning techniques."
"Worked with the student on study skills. We talked about the ways and amount of time he should spend studying for each type of class. Next session I am going to start walking him through a real class, planning how to organize his time and plan study sessions."
"Today the student and I worked on preparing for his finals and going over what he had completed (that was on the calendar). We focused mainly on History and English."
"We finished creating goals and I introduced where we would work on organizing. We also reviewed her schedule for taking the final for her online class."
"We worked on test taking skills and on confidence! We also got some school supplies organized for the start of the school year."
"The student and I discussed areas in study skills in which he wished to focus and ways in which we can improve those skills. We also discussed a broad overview of the direction in which we will begin. We worked through some basic homework assignments together with remaining time."
"Worked on plan for organization, note taking, and effective study habits. We will come up with a more specific academic organization plan on 8/28 after the student attends his high school orientation."
"The student has a social studies quiz and needed help preparing. We went over some study strategies. I had him look his timeline over and then gave him a blank paper to try to recreate it. This is a mini-quiz he can give himself. We went over the timeline together and found ways to help remember. We talked about mnemonic devices and came up with some. We made connections about the dates. He created his own timeline again and did much better. We also made flash cards for his vocabulary. I would have him look up the word, but then have him tell me in his own words what it meant, and we would write his own description on the card. He was coming up with his own mnemonic devices as we were doing the vocabulary to help him remember."
"Covered everything from reading comprehension, social studies, and geometry. Going to focus on reading comprehension across subjects in our next meeting."
