Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I covered 3 lessons out of her lesson book. She understood the concepts really well, and I asked her to complete the mixed practice associated with each lesson and on Tuesday we will review any problems she needed to go over. I am also going to send her a 7th grade practice test which I asked her to complete by Sunday night and send me the answers for it. We will be meeting next Tuesday to review this material and start on new lessons."
"The problems on the student's exam required her to solve problems with numbers with negative exponents and to rewrite variables with negative exponents to have positive exponents. After practice and seeing how it works, she was able to solve them successfully on her own."
"The student and I spent the session correcting her last quiz and taking a practice quiz- both of which were covering factoring polynomials. I showed her example problems and how to figure out what the constants should be. She was able to go through and complete the test corrections. She then took a 10 question practice test with a 15 minute time limit and did very well. I left her with a page of notes summarizing how to graph polynomials and told her to continue to work through a worksheet packet I left her."
"We went through her worksheet. It was about exponential functions. I explained how she has to find domain, range, symmetry, and then graph them. We also worked on transformation and decreasing or increasing as well. She was able to them by herself. Then I explained the concept and properties of log. I explained that this is the inverse function of exponential function. She understood them. She is doing great."
"In this session we worked on the student's online homework, based on finding the break-even point of word problems using linear systems. The assignment had ten different questions on writing the linear system from the problems, and finding the break-even point with the given system. I had to work through every problem with her because she has trouble connecting the steps that she has to follow in every problem. She also has trouble adding and subtracting negative numbers and numbers with different signs. However, we were able to work through these issues and complete her homework assignment correctly."
"Today we spent more time simplifying rational expressions. She has a test on Tuesday. I left her with some extra practice out of the book and suggested that she use the answers in the back of the book as a reference to check her work."
"Yesterday I worked with the student on her algebra assignment. She is getting ready for a quiz, so she had to complete a review. She did well with the problems once we went through a few examples together."
"For biology today we went over the test he did poorly on and went over the questions he got wrong. He remembered almost all of them from our review session last time. We also went over some of the new material, DNA. He seemed to understand it well so we didn't spend much time on it. For algebra I gave him a few problems to work on that covered some of the stuff we've worked on in the past month, so I could see how he was retaining information. He did well on all of the questions. We went over the stuff he'd been working on in class, which was systems of linear equations. He didn't seem to need any help on this subject, so we worked through his homework problems. I tried to emphasize slowing down and being careful, which seems to be one of his biggest problems, and checking his work when he is able to or when the solution isn't obvious to him. He seems to be doing very well in both subjects after catching up the past few weeks."
"Student and I worked on graphing parabolas. We paid specific attention on the different ways to interpret the functions and how they were related. We ended with a quick preview of even and odd functions."
"Concepts covered included review of chapter seven. It including exponents, exponential functions, growth and decay and geometric sequences. Student struggled most with exponential functions and recursive formula. Student had a great attitude and felt proficient about her upcoming test!"
"I worked with the student on adding and subtracting polynomials, finding the degree, and simplifying. We did some review of physics problems as well. Next session is on Saturday at 10am. We will be reviewing for an algebra quiz Wednesday. During this session the student presented me with two quizzes and two tests from algebra lessons on chapter 6 & 7. I scanned these solutions into the computer and sent them to her dad by email. He was grateful for the solutions and decided that we should schedule a special session Saturday in addition to the session scheduled next Tuesday right before the student's algebra quiz on Wednesday. Thanks!"
"The student and I went over his exam and focused on operations and combining exponents with the same base. We then did worksheets focusing more on finding the vertex, axis of symmetry, and intercepts for quadratic equations."
