"The student made a 100% on his exam! I thought it was very neat that he checked over all the types of problems he could check and he actually did them all correctly the first time around! He was very proud of himself, as was I, that he made a perfect score! Amazing progress. We also started new material today involving graphs of multiple types of functions. He began by feeling overwhelmed by all the new information, but I showed him how everything was just a variation of the same thing. I also showed him how each of the graphs forms so that he has a deeper understanding of what the graphs represent. He claimed this was really helpful as it helped the graphs seem less intimidating. We also reviewed the quadratic formula and other ways to find the x-intercepts of a quadratic equation. He is really enthusiastic to learn these concepts! He always does the small set of problems I leave for him to do, and always goes above and beyond to practice and become a successful student."
"The student had some science homework that she wanted to work on. The work focused around thermal energy transfer between different quantities of water. She seemed to understand this material well, so I decided to take another look ahead at some math concepts that I expect her to see in the next month or so."
"Today the student and I spent our time outlining his chapter eight in his marine biology book, and creating vocabulary flashcards. He has a vocab quiz at the end of the week, so we will be getting him fully prepared."
"We continued working on quadratic equations. I showed the student a few different properties of parabolas. He is having difficulty memorizing equations, such as the x=-b/(2a) for the x position of the vertex. We were able to come up with a geometric method for finding the vertex. The geometric method worked better for him."
"The student and I went over review for her test. She will need to know how to factor polynomials, use the quadratic formula, and complete the square to find solutions. We made notes of steps to take when approaching all of the problems that will be on her test. She used those steps to complete a review worksheet. I also asked her to study it tomorrow before her test. We will work on preparing her to have more confidence on tests as well."
"Today we covered linear inequalities: systems of linear inequalities and word problems involving linear inequalities. We reviewed strategies, which involved isolating the y variable, and drawing two linear functions and then looking for the intersections. The student is well prepared for the test this week. She has a high grade in her math class."
