"Today, we worked through a translation passage. Overall, the student did very well, translating at a much faster pace than when we started working together. She still has some vocabulary issues, but has incorporated some of the grammatical material, like relative clauses, quite well. By writing out the sentences she was translating on my whiteboard, I was able to make notes and help her to segment the sentences into relative clauses, prepositional phrases, etc., and see how they were structured. This also helped to alleviate the problem of staring at a huge wall of text and getting lost."
"We started with an overview of the words from Chapter 12. The student was very quick with remembering how to identify the conjugation and declension of each verb and noun! Then we previewed the grammar for the chapter, which was a review of the uses of the verb "to be." Before we worked through the longer translation, the student read all the extra vocab words listed in the margins. I noticed him taking charge a great deal more, reading the words and coming up with related words in English! He had a lot of excellent questions about the history and many of the words! We got through about half of the translation. I noticed that the translation is coming more and more naturally to the student, and some skills we were working on last time (like figuring out if a noun was to be translated as a subject or direct object) he was putting into practice easily this time. He has been making great progress and is a delight to work with!"
"We covered gerunds, gerundives and passive periphrastics: how to form them, recognize them and translate them. We also continued with scansion of the meter of some lines from the "Metamorphoses". The student got the difference between gerunds and gerundives and was able to translate passive periphrastics successfully. We also translated some lines from "Pyramus and Thisbe" so he could answer some questions about the translation."
