"We went through a couple of problems from his assignment sheet that involved finding the volume, density and masses of substances from a graph. We also went through some problems in algebra that required finding the slopes and equations of a straight lines. Lastly, we organized his study materials to ensure that he will be best prepared for the next day of school."
"I helped the student with her Chemistry homework, which was mostly on producing the atomic orbital configurations of different elements. This was a fairly new concept for her, but I had a useful way of describing the atomic orbital configurations as a hotel address where there is a building, floor, and room. This seemed to help her. By the end of the session, she was able to accurately produce an element's configurations and identify the element when given a configuration. Lastly, she had to write two test questions for each of the four chapters she has covered in class. I helped her go through her notes to understand these chapters and produce questions with accurate answers and explanations to them. This session seemed to be fairly productive for her. I am confident that she is truly understanding the material."
"The student and I continued working through electrochemistry, discussing challenge problems involving balancing redox equations, using stoichiometry, working with redox reactions involving acids, identifying reduction reactions (the cathode) and oxidation reactions (the anode), using electrochemical cell diagrams, determining spontaneity using electrochemical potentials, and using the Nernst equation to find potentials at non-equilibrium/ non-standard conditions. He is now quite confident in his ability to work with redox equations, but more practice with electrochemical cell problems in particular will definitely be helpful. We will continue to work on this."
"The student and I covered atomic models, periodicity, and quantum theory. I left her with homework. She is very driven and studious, and prepares for the lesson well. We'll work on her presentation skills to help her gain confidence."
"The student and I covered big picture ideas in topics related to inorganic/general chemistry this morning. I demonstrated concepts with the use of practice problems, visuals, and conceptual problem based learning. He readily recognized concepts and started to connect big-picture ideas. We discussed units of measurement, like volume, density, temperature, meters, liters, etc. and also atomic numbers, atomic mass, isotopes, ions and ionic compounds, balancing equations, molar mass and moles, and others. In our next session, I hope to present him with a list of new concepts and repeat the same methodology as today."
