Session Summaries by Elementary Math Tutors

The student did very well today. He picked out his own sight words and is showing great progress in blending his letters. He decided to re-read "The Swimmer." As he read, there were some words he was able to sound out by blending. He knows quotation marks mean that someone is speaking, so he is able to read with expression! In math, he has mastered finding time by the hour and 30 minutes! He learned pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters and their value. He is able to identify pennies and nickels and knows their values more easily than dimes and quarters. Since he knows how to count by 1s, 5s, and 10s, we will practice that correlation to money. He did a great job today!

The student had a very productive session. She continues to be very motivated. She completed her homework, which included multiplication and division of 3 and 4 digit numbers. In addition, she worked on reducing fractions to the simplest form. She also added fractions with different denominators so she had more practice with her multiplication facts. She has homework that includes further practice on the concepts we covered today.

The student had an assignment on place value into the millions that we reviewed together. She somewhat grasped the concept that each place value to the left is 10 times greater than the one on the left if it is an identical number and that the number on the right is one tenth the number on the left if it is an identical number. She practiced how to read numbers out loud to the hundred millions place. She understands the different periods: ones, thousands, millions, and billions. She still needs a little more practice on stating the place value of a specific digit, although she did figure out how to find the exact value of a digit. We also worked on the steps to round a number, also explaining on a number line which number it is closer to. We will review this topic again too. Overall, she worked hard.

The student had another excellent session today! Her class has moved from "hands-on equations" to verbal equations, which are posed as word problems. While this was a bit more challenging than the algebra exercises we were doing on Tuesday, she listened well and was able to follow my lead on the tougher problems. She even requested a "bonus set" from me so she could do extra practice! We then completed a page of her "Wonder" packet. She picked up on figurative language and was able to give great analyses of word definitions and similes. I am SO happy to hear about her assessment scores going up; I couldn't be happier!

The student had completed his homework, and I was very impressed overall. I think that he is improving in both math and English, as I see him getting more answers correct and moving through the questions quicker without compromising accuracy.

The student had homework in both math and reading. I supervised her math homework, which consisted of computation problems (mostly with zeros) and simple story problems. She sped through all the work very well. Her reading homework consisted of her writing out her new spelling words. I made sure that she said each word and spelled it orally as she did each one. I want her to carry this process with her all during her education as a means of reinforcing what she writes. She also read some pages from her reading book. Then, I read some pages to her about storms, which she asked me to do. She did well with everything.
