Calculus Tutoring review by Orkhan in Brookline, MA
In the student's preparation for Physical Chemistry, I gave him a lesson on derivatives. I went over simple derivatives, derivatives of special functions, implicit differentiation and u-substitution. I had him solve a few examples, and gave him a homework consisting of 10 questions that he is to complete for our next session.

The student told me that she believes she did well on her test on integrals. Today we focused on computing the limit of integrals using summation. She seemed challenged by the material at first; however, as we did more problems, she was able to completely grasp the concept. We completed the homework assignment, and moved ahead. We started the new lesson with summation rules, and completed half of the assignment. She should be familiar with it when the teacher teaches it in class the next day.

The student and I went over more complicated examples of doing integration by substitution. Then we went over inverse functions and using derivatives to interpret functional behavior. The inverses were hard for her to picture, so at the next session I plan to bring my laptop and show her some of the concepts visually, which I think will help her understand inverse functions better.

Calculus Tutoring review by Matthew in Brookline, MA
The student has a test next week on some graphing concepts from algebra (lines, circles, ellipses, hyperbolas, and parabolas). We worked through his assigned homework on hyperbolas and parabolas, and he did really well. He's getting much more comfortable re-arranging equations, and he's got a pretty good understanding of the basic equation forms for each shape. I gave him a few hints on the harder problems, and tried to show him multiple ways, whenever possible, to help him better understand how all of the ideas fit together. We had some time left after we finished the assigned problems, so we worked a bunch of review problems on lines, and he did great. He knows the forms and is completely comfortable with finding equations of lines in different situations (parallel, perpendicular, through two points, etc.). I think the only thing we need to go over before his test is to make sure he knows all of the quadratic forms by heart and that he can tell the difference between them just from the equations.

Calculus Tutoring review by Joseph in Brookline, MA
The student and I got started this evening with indefinite integration and finding general solutions for polynomial, rational, and radical expressions. The student had gotten into the rhythm of the process by the time we finished reviewing her assignment, so we looked ahead at her upcoming work with particular solutions, differential equations, and vertical motion problems as well.
