I earned my PhD in communication studies from the University of Kansas (KU), but my lifelong passion of helping others shape their ideas and present them with confidence began during my undergraduate at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC). While earning my BA in communication studies, I also worked as a writing consultant at the UMKC Writing Center and fell in love with tutoring and teaching. I also fell in love with communication, philosophy, journalism, literature, and the social sciences. From there, I went to graduate school at KU and specialized in interpersonal, organizational, and small group communication, as well as qualitative methods. For my dissertation, I conducted research at a domestic violence center to help them better serve their community. Since then, I've continued to provide training to government and non-profit organizations that serve people who have experienced gender-based violence. I've also taught communication and methods courses to undergraduate students at UMKC, KU, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where I also taught graduate students. Since my professor days, I've provided tutoring and writing help to students across the United States. I particularly enjoy helping students with public speaking and writing - especially because I'm a published author and speaker myself! I know how challenging it can be while also being so rewarding to share your ideas in clear, evidence-based, powerful ways. I'm honored to have won several awards for teaching/mentoring students, and whether undergrads, grads, or community members, students have said that I'm caring, enthusiastic, and skilled at explaining complex subjects in clear ways. When I'm not helping others build on their strengths, I'm usually adventuring to nature spots or making all kinds of art (especially if it's some kind of repurposing or "trash"). I look forward to learning with you!
