After more than thirty years in education I still get a thrill from teaching a student to read. I have worked as a classroom teacher, reading specialist and literacy coach in three states and half a dozen districts. Nothing is more satisfying than helping a student who has been struggling, grow into an accomplished and confident reader.
Reading is so fundamental to modern life, I decided to specialize in it even as an undergrad while earning my Bachelors degree at Lesley University. Because of this decision, I was already certified as a Reading Specialist in the state of Massachusettes when I attended Harvard Graduate School of Education to earn my Masters degree. This enabled me to take courses beyond those required for reading certification which expanded my understanding of the brain, as well as of teaching and learning.
My goal had been to teach first grade, and though I have worked with students of all types and at all levels, including preschool, high school, learning disabled, ELL and dyslexic, I have done everything but!
The success of my students is always my primary concern. When I discovered that Albanian speaking students at my last school did not have the materials or resources of some of our other populations, a colleague and I applied for, and were awarded, a grant from the Fund for Teachers. We used this fellowship to travel to Albanian speaking countries to learn more about their language, culture and history. We purchased 100 Albanian language childrens books for our school library and established an annual Albanian Heritage Event.
You never know where life may take you. But if you can read effortlessly and with deep understanding you will have the ability to navigate it with confidence. It will be my pleasure and privilege to make that happen in a fun, engaging and effective way.
When I am not teaching I love to read of course, and enjoy science fiction, fantasy, mysteries and historical fiction. I also write poetry and children's fiction and spend a good deal of time walking and thinking up stories.
Undergraduate Degree: Lesley University - Bachelor of Science, Elementary School Teaching
Graduate Degree: Harvard University - Masters in Education, Reading Teacher Education
My main hobby is writing stories for children and I participate in a weekly critique group with other writers led by a published author. I enjoy baking and luckily also love to go walking and hiking to burn off the extra calories. And of course I love to read!
