I have been working in education now for the past five years, and within those five years I have learned a lot about what it means to be an educator. I have worked in all levels from elementary up to college. I want to further my career in teaching, in which I have a passion for and feel that I am prepared to pursue my graduate degree. Originally, when I graduated college, I graduated with a history degree and my focus was to teach history. However, I found that those jobs were very limited and required many years of past teaching experience, which I did not have. I then turned my focus on an entry level position within education as a teacher's assistant. I was hired as a long term substitute teacher for a special education class at a high school. While working there I discovered that I wanted to be more than a teacher's assistant and conduct my own classroom. Therefore, I am excited to working as an assistant teacher and pursuing my graduate degree, all in taking the first steps to becoming a lead teacher.

Anyone can be a teacher, but really great ones are the ones that go that extra mile. They know that students of all levels can learn, that all it takes is finding a common ideology. To be a truly great teacher, you have to find an interest that the students crave and apply it to the curriculum material. You have to make the curriculum that you are teaching, an exciting and vibrant experience for the students. By being able to do this, you are showing the students that you are not just reading them a lesson, but rather you are having them experience one. As all great teachers know, experience speaks volumes in exposing young minds to new and exciting opportunities that they can strive for.

As educators, we often tell students that they can become anything that they choose to be in life. While this is true, we are reasonable for nurturing their dreams, while leading them down the road of education. For many students, going down this road can be very difficult and often very scary, because they are experiencing new and interesting subjects. We also have to know that all students have their own way of learning. Education is an individualized field and one that requires us to tailor the curriculum to the students. We have to be creative in how we are able to get the message across to our students. The success of the future is what drives teachers to continue to teach every single day. The most exhilarating gift that a teacher can receive is when a student who does not understand a concept, begins to grasp it. When a teacher is able to reach that student, that so many others have written off as being unteachable, makes their effort that all worthwhile. Teachers are the ones that mold the future each day in the classroom.

Our job is one that requires a lot of nurturing and caring. We have to be able to establish a relationship of trust with the students as well as their families. In many cases we are seen as another member of their family because we spend so much time with their children. Guiding them on the road of life, just as their parents do at home, we do in the classroom. Students know right from the start their teachers and families are a unified front, one that will help guide them when times get tough. While we spend time with the students, we also have the responsibility of keeping touch with their parents should, the student need that extra support. The parents as well, inform us if that student is having a hard time and needs that little bit of extra attention from us. We, as educators, always have to keep the lines of communications open, for the students benefit.

Our children are our future, and they need to be prepared for the working world, or else they will not be successful within it. Teaching makes a difference. Everyone has progressed to where they are because they had a teacher. Once a teacher closes the classroom door each day, and begin teaching they are the ones who are deciding what is going to happen. There are not a lot of professions that provide an individual with so much creativity. To be able to open doors for students and allow them to make their own individual opinions. After all, the best teachers are those who show you where to look, but not what to see.
