Would you rather listen to me talk to you for a few hours or engage in a conversation with me? Personally, I always prefer a back and forth. I think that in order to really learn something, you have to be able to talk about it. To teach material to someone effectively, I should be able to hone in on what it is they're not understanding as I'm going over it. That's what's attracted me to tutoring.

I'm very non-judgemental and I like working with teenagers. I have three younger siblings who are in high school right now (phew!). They have varying attitudes towards school in general, ranging from anxiety to apathy, and I feel that my experience with them has given me some skills in assuaging some of these feelings.

Personally, I love learning. Right now I study ecology at University. Outside of the classroom I'm an upbeat, down-to-earth type of girl. I have some years of experience in the service industry, and I like to think I'm good at getting people to come out of their shells.

What is your teaching philosophy?

In a low pressure setting, more like a conversation than an interview, I ask them to explain or demonstrate concepts to me the best they can. We can move forward from where we are.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I'd try to connect with them personally so I'd be better able to understand them.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I could gauge their interest and try to get them into some educational YouTube accounts I like or to read a book.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I'd give encouragement when they do well and make them feel good about themselves.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I'd ask them a few questions about it to try and figure out which part they didn't understand and then go into it from a new angle or use an analogy.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Get them to slow down as they read it and tell me what their gut tells them about the passage. A lot of times people second guess themselves instead of trusting the feeling that the author is creating.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Back and forth conversation about a topic and their worries with the topic helps students learn.
