CHSPE Tutoring FAQ
Whether you’re taking the California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE) to get ahead in the workforce, graduate from high school early, or attend college, one of Varsity Tutors’ talented personal CHSPE tutors can help you study before test day. With CHSPE tutoring, you won’t have to worry about wasting time in studying for the test in an unorganized manner. Your tutor can craft each session with your specific strengths and weaknesses in mind and help you work on the concepts and skills on which you most need to focus.
If you struggle with English and Language Arts, Varsity Tutors’ CHSPE tutoring can help you bolster your skills in reading comprehension and literary analysis. Our tutors can model useful strategies for analyzing reading sections, matching synonyms, and picking out clues from a word’s context. While a tutor can help you learn vocabulary words that frequently appear on the test, often the best path to success on the CHSPE is in learning strategies for answering questions quickly and accurately; the English component of the CHSPE has more than eighty questions, which leaves you little time to work on each one. A skilled tutor can help you hone your ability to move through questions rapidly but carefully by eliminating incorrect answers and using your scratch paper to your advantage.
The CHSPE also tests your knowledge of English grammar, and for many—especially those who haven’t taken an English class in a while—this can be the most difficult part of the exam. With Varsity Tutors’ CHSPE tutoring, you can review the particular areas in which you struggle, both by revisiting general concepts and familiarizing yourself with the specific ways in which these topics appear on the test. The CHSPE’s English section also includes a writing component. You'll be asked to respond to a prompt evaluating your ability to argue a point and provide meaningful examples. A tutor can help you learn to brainstorm, construct a thesis statement, draft paragraphs with effective transitions, and edit your work, all within the time frame.
For other students, the Math section may seem the most daunting. While the CHSPE doesn't cover calculus or trigonometry, it does feature algebra, geometry, statistics, and arithmetic in tricky questions intended to stump test-takers. A Varsity Tutors CHSPE tutor can catch you up to speed on the math concepts you most need to review, and demonstrate quick and efficient ways to handle difficult questions.
Since this exam is only used in the state of California, online study materials and practice tests are difficult to find, and a personal tutor can be a huge advantage in preparing to pass the test. Call our directors today to learn more about the specific CHSPE tutoring options available near you and get a head start on your academic or professional career!

Recent CHSPE Tutoring Session Notes
I met with the student for the first time. We began immediately with test preparation. The student stated that her strong subject was math, so we spent a good portion of 45 minutes testing different aspects of math to ensure that she is as strong as she believes to be-she is. Math and reason are strong attributes of the student's. Additionally, we spent time on analogies and vocabulary. She did well on both. The student was given homework to complete before the next session.
This was my first session with the student. I began to assess her abilities on the assessment test and started coming up with a plan to get her English Language Arts skills where they need to be for test in a couple of weeks.
We did diagnostics on both the math and critical reading sections. The student is very bright but needs to be more confident. She missed only two problems each on the math and reading sections. We will continue to work on confidence-building and review areas in which she needs to improve. Great session!
Today, we covered acids, bases, [H+], [OH-], pH; pOH in preparation for the student's test next class session she has. She originally had a bit of trouble going from pOH to [H3O+], for instance, but as we did many practice problems with these conversions, she quickly mastered it.
Another excellent session with the student! She buckled down and started working. She is in the middle of the state math test right now, so we just worked on the third and final section, since that is what she will be doing tomorrow. She started doing much better on the problems. We discussed the importance of working slowly and methodically through the problems. She did a great job and I'm sure she is doing a great job on her state test!
The student is taking his reading portion of the state assessment test. We focused on long passages in order to get him in that mind set. He continues to improve. Overall he feels confident, but just needs more practice. The more the better!
