Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"For this session, the student worked on comparing fractions with the same and different denominators. She was able to do this by creating a number line and decomposing the fractions. She struggled with this concept when a whole number was involved, but was able to grasp the concept after some practice. She finished Lessons 11-14 today. Great job!"
"The student and I continued going over functions and angles in math. The material is still fairly new to him, but he is improving. He and I reviewed a writing activity. He is starting to write more independently. Additionally, he and I read from his chapter book. He read very strongly today. He was assigned 8 more pages of reading tonight."
"The student and I continued to work on ISEE test prep. We continued to work on decimals. I also showed him some shortcuts to help him find the answers more quickly."
"The student and I covered a few 5th grade math standards that he will be expected to know in the beginning of fifth grade and revisited a few old topics. This allows me to gauge a good starting place with him. He was excited to learn the small portion of the new topics we very briefly discussed. This was our first session, and already I can see how great he is. We will work on mental math in the coming sessions, as well as continue to work through any math standards he is not fluent with and introduce the new ones he is expected to learn this coming year."
"The student and I covered quadratic equations and inverse variation. She took to inverse variation well, and was able to identify the differences between inverse and direct variation after our session. She was also able to identify a quadratic equation, factor quadratic equations, and find zeroes with quadratic equations. She has shown growth in her ability to graph equations, but still needs more practice to increase her accuracy and her speed in graphing. Her usage of t-charts to help graph x and y positions has improved her graphing, but she will still need more practice."
"The student and I covered rates and ratios today. She said she felt like she had a decent grasp of the concept from class, and she does. However, her difficulties lie in the foundational work behind the problems, more specifically dividing using fractions and decimals. We talked about how to deal with these problems and why we're are able to handle them the way we do without changing the value and getting the wrong answer. I left her with three supplemental worksheets that will help solidify the ratio concept and give her additional division practice."
