Tutoring review by Nakul in Burleson, TX
On Tuesday, the student and I spent the session reviewing a worksheet in preparation for his test. On the worksheet were problems related to plotting transformations of trigonometric functions, identifying trigonometric functions, and using the unit circle to solve complex trigonometric functions.

The student and I reviewed most of chapter 2 of his text book, which was over adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing rational numbers. He is pretty comfortable with this material because he saw it last year, so I don't envision him having many problems going forward. We will just be sure to review his homework over the next few weeks and prepare for the next exam. He is doing a great job.

Tutoring review by Jo in Burleson, TX
The student worked on her math homework. She had 3 digit addition and subtraction and rounding. She had a little trouble with the rounding. She tended to confuse rounding to the 10th and 100th place. We will work on rounding more next week if needed. Next we played a math game with cards. We took turns drawing a card from the pile, then we named what numbers, when summed, equaled the number of the card we drew. She enjoyed this game and it showed that her addition skills have improved since we first started the tutoring.

Tutoring review by Sarah in Burleson, TX
The student's mother contacted me for a tutoring session upon hearing that the student had received an 80% on his test. We went through the test together, correcting all of his mistakes and writing a verbal explanation of where he went wrong. The majority of his errors occurred on the test for one of two reasons: either he had the right idea initially but lacked confidence and then didn't complete the problem and/or went back and changed his answer (on the first problem he wrote down on the test that he thought his next step was to cross multiply but then failed to do so and complete the equation) or he made a simple error that then carried down (failing to distribute to both terms inside of parentheses). In order to address the lack of confidence, we drilled the types of problems in which he expressed a lack of confidence which included solving multi-step equations involving rational expressions and operations with scientific notation. For the other problems, when he articulated his thought process out loud he was able to catch his mistakes. Going forward into future tutoring sessions, we will be focusing on doing harder problems in the workbook in order to better prepare him for the tests.

Tutoring review by John in Burleson, TX
Last session, we introduced radians, so we continued the discussion into trig values at different angles. We first derived the unit circle (which allows memorization or special trig values easier) by using special right triangles. The unit circle helped us visualize the graphical form of trig functions and made their periodical nature evident. We learned to find the trig ratio given an angle value and also learned the opposite which was finding an angle given a trig ratio. Sine and cosine are fairly straightforward, so we focused on the other four trig functions when practicing to determine angles from trig values. Lastly, we learned to find the other five trig function values, given one trig value. We did this by sketching a triangle using the given trig value and the Pythagorean theorem. Once the triangle sides were determined, the six trig values could easily be determined.
