Session Summaries by Languages Tutors

Burbank, CA Languages tutoring
We worked on some Spanish and Math. The end of the quarter is approaching so the student has a busy week ahead of her. She has a Spanish test sometime next week (her teacher wasn't specific whether Tuesday or later) and a Math test on Monday. We have been keeping up to date with both of her classes and even getting a little ahead, but she needs a little more studying time and work on Spanish. We spent part of the session practicing math and part of the session making study sheets and reviewing Spanish. She has all the materials to have great success in both classes. She needs to review more Spanish by studying and memorizing her conjugations and vocabulary and going over all the worksheets we have done together and she has done in class.

I worked with Student #1 and we reviewed numbers up to 15, and discussed vocabulary words for Halloween. She is eager and willing to try to say new words. Then, with Student #2, the three of us used the Spanish "I Spy" book I brought. This includes new vocabulary (although not in context, so it's best as an introduction and not as a primary method of learning), and especially counting. Student #2 did very well in counting, and really enjoyed the book. I assigned homework for all the students to work on together, that emphasizes vocabulary in rooms of the house and furniture, and encourages dictionary use, writing, and teamwork.

Tonight we reviewed selected vocabulary from Lesson 1 & 2 of part 2. I encouraged the students to use active listening and speaking skills as much as possible. We did a few role playing exercises, Q & A, and read a couple of dialogues from the textbook. Finally, I introduced them very briefly to core vocabulary on numbers and transportation/ directions. We discussed what kind of exercises I need to provide for them for practice at home to strengthen speech fluidity and vocabulary retention. Tonight was the last in-person session with one of the students, who is traveling to Russia this Friday. The other student and I will continue meeting once a week for the next month or so.

Student 1 and I continued working on foods and drinks, what we want and like. I introduced the different ways to form questions, but we need to do more practice with that next time. Student 2 and I talked about reflexive verbs, specifically ones we use to get ready in the morning.
