Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student is preparing for the Math Level 2 Subject Test. Right now we are focusing on fine-tuning the last few concepts that she is having trouble with. So we went through an old test and identified a few more of the problem areas she was having. These included functions and graphing, problems involving logarithms, and higher level algebra. I explained the concepts and came up with practice problems for her to do. She felt much more confident at the end of our time."
"The student and I spent most of the session evaluating her strengths and weaknesses within biology. She will be taking the test in December, so we are working out a lesson plan to accommodate that. She seems to have a good handle on basic ecology and cell function, but I need her to take a diagnostic test to help determine what areas she needs the most help in."
"The student and I spent today's lesson looking over 2 chapters in his study book. One chapter was on negative numbers and the number line. The second chapter was on probability. I think the negative numbers review was very helpful and the student saw how it was applicable to some of the advanced topics we have been looking at. He also improved a lot during the practice exercises. The probability section was all new to the student, but he understood some of the principles (flipping a coin, rolling a die). Further practice will help him become more confident with probability."
"The student and I worked through more critical reading and sentence completion questions. He has good logical reasoning and is able to identify the correct answer when he knows all of the words. I believe if he devotes time to memorizing vocab words, he will do fine."
"For this lesson, the student and I first focused on building her vocabulary by going through the flashcards of the words she doesn't know and then going over the meanings for prefixes and word roots. Next we practiced on some Reading sections and there is some improvement but she still needs to work on building her vocabulary. On the passages, however, she got almost all the questions correct so there has been great improvement there. We ended by working on strategies and approaches for different kinds of math problems and practiced with some questions."
"This was our last session before the student takes the SAT subject test in Physics. We reviewed a number of topics and completed associated questions based on the areas that she felt needed the most work. These included optics, harmonic oscillators, and special mechanics (pulleys, inclined planes, etc.). She is well prepared for her upcoming exam."
"We covered rational functions, limits, end behavior of graphs, and piecewise functions, including step-wise functions. We went over practice problems and learned new graphing methods for piecewise and factor-dependent graphs, such as x=T y=T+2. She improved her understanding of graphs over time. I said if she has time, do a practice test."
"The student and I reviewed some problems from a section he did after the last time we met, and we also went through a few new sections. I already see a lot of improvement in his math skills since the first time we met, so I think he will do really well on the exam next weekend. I suggested that he do more practice out of his book, and I offered to meet with him one more time if he thinks it would help. If not, it was a pleasure working with him!"
"We reviewed the recent SAT that he took as homework. There are no pressing issues for him to need to study. Practice is really key for improving. We just have to make sure that the practice involves a full understanding of why questions are the correct/incorrect answers. Critical Reading passage practice is definitely something that would be a wise use of the student's study time."
"During this session, the student took a second full practice SAT exam. As with the previous practice exam, I made every attempt to create conditions similar to what he would encounter in his actual exam experience. We completed the entire exam, and I plan on grading and scaling his results before our next session on Tuesday. We will then use the session on Tuesday to review the results and discuss what they mean - ideally, this will tell us what, if anything, we need to focus on the final week of preparation before the exam!"
"The student did really well on her first practice test- 580 for reading was the lowest, 620 for writing and 630 for math. Went over all of the problems she missed, and then focused on some vocabulary work/strategies for those fill-in-the-word questions. I think that our next goal should be 650, 700 and 700- that shouldn't be too hard once she gets the hang of the test set-up, then we can zero in on any problem areas."
"Today I had the student take a full-length practice test. She did well. After she finished the exam, we went over the verbal section."
