Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This session was my review session with the student before he takes the exam. His score has been constantly improving and I'm confident that he will do well on the real exam. For this week, he scored a 680 on a diagnostic I gave him. Concepts included logarithms and comprehending what the question is asking/looking for."
"I had the student read a few reading passages to me out loud. We focused less on the test questions and more on understanding the passage. I would have him read a paragraph and then explain to me what he thought was happening in the passage."
"We reviewed assessment Passage-Based Reading strategy, I identified questions involving the comparison of paired passages to be something the student needs to cover further. I had him do a Passage-Based Reading section with that advice in mind, and I helped him revise his college application essay. I asked the student to do at least one practice Critical Reading section a day for the next session."
"The student has done a great job of following her studying schedule, so we were able to use our time today to review some things she had gone over. We discussed the new information she had learned about the Paleolithic and Neolithic, and the growth of civilizations in Mesopotamia, Egypt, Europe, Asia, and India, as well as the interactions among those civilizations. I quizzed her on some of the information she had covered, and answered a few questions she had prepared. I also spent about 15 minutes telling her the political and technological background of the early 20th century and WWI, hoping to spark her interest in finding out more for herself about wars and revolutions."
"We worked on some math, as well as the writing section. We did some work on improving paragraphs, and he did pretty well there. He also did good work on sentence completion questions. His knowledge of Spanish helped however, since many words were similar in Spanish. We did some more work on subject/verb agreement and adverb/adjective usage. He seems to be coming along well. Next lesson I plan to spend some more time on percents and weighted averages."
"This was our last session together before his test next Saturday. I did see an improvement in his test taking skills from just a month ago."
"Covered essay writing and tried writing an essay together. I assigned the student to write more essays and send them to me for grading. We also went over math practice questions. I also told her to take a practice test this weekend."
"--Reading Comprehension Talked about trap answers. Got more practice answering a question before looking at the answer choices. --The student is answering questions in his own words very well."
"We spent this session going over a practice test that the student took over the weekend and talked about what she wants out of the test as well. The same mistakes were still occurring, but with her earlier score being at 1590, I think she can improve to 1700 with the work she has done. This can be done by focusing on making sure her easy math problems are done correctly, taking her time on the reading comprehension and focusing on subject verb object and subject/predicate relationships in writing. I assigned her to do another test and to look over some more vocab for our last session next Monday."
"During today's session, we discussed the results of the student's last attempt at the SAT subject tests. He received a 630 on the math and a 570 on the literature, so we decided we would focus on that subject first, as it seemed he still needed more extensive work in that. I suggested we try focusing on a review of the literary terms that would be commonly used and asked about on the test. I believe we should continue to focus on memorizing the specialized terms that are so often referenced, and that completing individual practice questions or sets of them does not show much unless he already has a fair familiarity with the vocabulary."
"Today we focused specifically on Math and Writing. I particularly tried to emphasize time management and willingness to skip problems that the student would not be able to finish quickly. This is a vital skill."
"- We covered SAT math - Arithmetic (fractions, rates, ratios, percentages) and Geometry. We also covered SAT Critical Reading. - The student still finds some rate and ratio problems challenging, but is improving. She is also fairly comfortable with geometry"
