Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked on an official SAT practice test, working on doing multiple questions in a row and layering answers on top of answers. She was really good with the writing and the math, and had some issues with reading. We focused more on reading strategies, and that seems to be working really well. I can see a marked improvement in her skills. We'll work on math and reading sections next Wednesday and really give those a good workout."
"We started our session today with a timed reading comprehension section. They both finished with time to spare, which was great. We went through the questions one by one, and went over some vocab. Then we did a math section together. They both did a really good job with math, taking their time with the problems."
"Today we completed the final test in the student's book -- things are going good. He seems to have all concepts in mind; we did review the 3D Distance Formula and Quadratic Formula."
"During this session, we completed two math sections, verbal sentence completions and one writing section. We moved on to verbal, where he did well and it was noticeable that his vocabulary was improving. We returned to math and this time he was much better and got the questions correct. We finished with writing, his strongest subject and he did well on all the questions. There were no concerns from this session."
"Completed critical reading section. Scored writing section. We are going to work on going through more of the material. I suggested that the student take the assessment in the near future."
"After taking out and going over all of her materials we decided to focus on the timescale of World War One, which seems to be the area we need to continue to cover. Much of what I did to help her with this subject was to simplify and tell the narrative in an interesting way. Starting next session we will go over these terms and begin looking at practice tests."
"We began today's session by finishing the student's first math diagnostic test. The student has especially improved in factoring, and she successfully factored every problem that required it today. We reviewed difference of squares, simple interest, undefined quantities, and special right triangles today. After finishing reviewing math, we reviewed the first writing diagnostic test from the website. We discussed ways to join independent and dependent clauses, nominative and objective forms of pronouns, parallelism, and using commas to set off non-essential descriptions. In our next session, we will finish reviewing the Writing diagnostic, doing problem 32 and then 40-60, and then we will go through the second math diagnostic test on the website."
"We began work on critical reading. I left the student with some suggestions, including some books to read for leisure that might help him with this subject."
"We went over her assessment materials one last time, I marked her math assessment assignments. The student did very well! We also reviewed her writing test taking abilities. I feel optimistic about her prospects for the exam this weekend. Good session."
"I gave the student some pointers on her essay sample which I had taken home to review; overall she did a great job of structuring, demonstrating a command of high level vocabulary, and presenting a clear thesis, which she proceeded to defend with examples and finally restated in her conclusion. We reviewed the score for her most recently completed practice test, which already shows improvement that we hope to build upon in time for the real SAT this coming weekend. We spent the rest of the lesson focusing on sample test questions involving vocabulary and geometry - these remain potential problem areas, but she is developing more confidence in guessing or calculating strong answers."
"It was our last session before the exam on Saturday and I think he has the knowledge to do well on this exam. We did some writing section drills from the practice tests to emphasize some of the issues we've been discussing and then spent time making a list of grammar tricks that he needs to keep in mind. He wanted to do a couple reading practice sections tonight and then spend Friday just letting himself mentally prepare for the exam."
"We worked through two practice test samples the student found online, focusing especially on coordinate and plane geometry problems. We talked about test taking and time management strategies and reviewed different math concepts as they came up in the practice questions."
